INVENTOR flmando, c7672 71 2111 9 ATTORNEY Ubliirlhl STATES- AMANDA JENKINS, OF XVINAMAC, INDIANA.
W'IN DOW SCREEN.
Application filed March 21, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMANDA JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll iuamac, in the county of Pulaski and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in l Vindow Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention re ates to screens for windows and has for its object the provision of a screen which is normally rolled upon a spring roller and which is capable of being pulled down for use, the roller and screen when wound thereon being enclosed within a casing which will protect the screen and greatly increase its life.
An important object is the provision of guides located at the sides of a window and within which the edges of the screen are disposed, braided strips being slidably disposed within these uides and engaging within the mesh of the screen.
An additional object is the provision of means of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and installation, highly efiicient in use, durable in service, and general improvement in the art.
ll ith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my screen showing it in extended position,
Figure 2 is a vertical cross sectional view through one of the guides, and
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings. the letter A designates a window frame having the usual sides B. In carrying out my invention I provide a guide member 10 secured upon each side B and this guide member is formed, for example, of sheet metal cut and bent to shape and is channelshaped in cross section whereby to provide an internal space 11 with which communicates a slot 12. On the inner side of one wall this guide is formed with a longitudinal groove 13 for a purpose to be described.
' Secured transversely of the window frame preferably at a height corresponding to the top of the lower sash, is a sheet metal housing 14 within which is journaled a sheet Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1922.
Serial No. 454,089.
Slidable within each of the guides 10 is a strip 19 from one side of which extend brads or pins 20 which are designed to pass through the mesh of the screen and these pins are disposed within the grooves 18.
In the use of the device it will be seen that ordinarily, that is when the screen is rolled upon the roller, the strips 19 are in their uppermost position. When the window is open and it is desired to place the screen in position, it is merely necessary that the operator grasp the handle 17 and pull downwardly thereon whereupon the screen will be unrolled from the roller 15. As the screen is moved downwardly the engagement of the mesh with the pins or brads 20 will cause the strips 19 to slide downwardly within the guides 10. The function of the strips and guides is to hold the screen rigid so that it cannot pull in or out.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and inexpensive-screen which may be easily installed and which may remain permanently upon the window and which will moreover be durable, especially in view of the fact that when not in use it is protected by the casing.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A window screen device comprising a casing secured transversely of the window frame at the intermediate portion thereof, a spring roller within said casing, a sheet of wire screen secured to and adapted to be wound upon said roller, a pair of upright channeled guide members located at opposite sides of the Window frame and extending throughout the lengthsthereof, rigid strips slidable Within said guide members and each carrying spaced pins arranged 1ongitudinally thereof, the side edges of unwound portions of the screen extending into said guides with the mesh of the soreenen- AMANDA JENKINS.
