To all whom it may concern Be it known that ll, GUsTAv A. MATTER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens, of which the following is a specification,
such,as will enable those skilled in the art.
to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window screens and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed for use in connection with either the top or bottom sash or in connection with both sashes; a
further object being to provide a screen forv view, the invention consists in a window,
screen or screens constructed and applied as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional, inside view of the bottom part of a window frame provided with my improvement and showing the bottom portion of the bottom sash, part of the construction being broken away; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 a

In the drawing forming part of this specification, T have shown at a the bottom portion of a window frame having the usual window opening a at the sides of which are the inner beads or strips a the central beads or strips of, and the outer bead or strip a. The bottom sash b is movablein the-space a formed by the beads or'strips a? and a and the top sash, not shown, is movable in the space a. formed by the beads or strips a and a, and the window frame is also provided, in the construction shown, with a bottom, transverse bead or strip a.
In the practice of my invention, ll form in the bottom sill a of the window frame, and under the space a in which'the lower sash I) is movable, a chamber a and placed therein is a suitable metal or other casing 0 containing a screen roller 01 on which is wound a screen (5 In the construction shown, one end of the roller 03 is provided with a helical spring 6, one endof which is secured to said roller and the other to the end of the casing 0 at 6 but said roller may be made in any way, or similar to other spring rollers of this class.
The casing c is provided with a lon 'tudinal opening a in the top thereof, an the sprmg. e is placed in a separate chamber formed by a supplemental end plate 0 in the casing c, said end plate being provided with a vertical slot 0 and in assembling these parts, the roller is passed down into the casing c and the ends thereof provided with bearings 03 The free end of the screen 03 is connected with a transverse plate f, centrally of the bottom thereof as shown at 7, and this plate is provided with upwardly directed fingers 9, two of which are employed, and these fingers are adapted to enter corresponding recesses 9 in the bottom bar 6 of I the bottom sash and said fingers are provided at their ends with outwardly directed nose-pieces g. The bottom rail 15 of the bottom sash is also provided with deep transverse chambers or recesses it which open forwardly or inwardly and in which are pivoted arms The armsz' are pivoted at their inner ends as shown at i and placed at the outer sides of said arms'are springs j, which normally hold them in operative position as shown in Fig. 3, and said arms are provided with handles 6 which project forwardly from the bottom rail of the bottom sash, and the arms a engage the fingers g or the nose-pieces g" thereof, to lock the screen cl in connection with the bottom sash.
When the screen is not in use, the plate f rests on the top of the casing c with the fingers g projecting upwardly, and when the sash is closed or lowered-into its closed position, the fingers 9 pass upwardly into the bottom rail 6 of said sash, in which position the arms 2' are moved outwardly by said fingers, after which said arms are forced inwardly by the springs j and into the operav tive position shown in Fig. 3.
e -so With this construction, the raising of the bottom sash will carry the screen d with it and the space below the sash will be closed by said screen and no insects can enter the buildingbeneathvthe sash. If it is desired to notuse the screen, all that is necessary in raising the sash, is to move the arms 11 outwardly so that they will be disengaged from the fingers g and the screen will remain in the casing 0 when the sash is raised.
