To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GRANT L. HoUs'rEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of window screens wound upon a roller in a casing with the latter secured to the window frame on the outside of the sashes.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed yet highly eii'icient and -durable screenhof the class set forth having novel means for detachably` securing the casing in place either at the upper end of the lower or the upper sash and with this general object in v1ew, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved screen showing the casing thereof applied to a window frame at the upper end of the lower sash;

In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 has reference to a casing to be secured between the sides of a window frame F adjacent the upper end of either sash thereof, the ends 2 of said casing being each formed of a single piece of metal. rlhe inner edges of the ends 2 are bent laterally into the casing to form vertical shoulders 3 to abut the inner corners C of the frame F, said edges being bent at right angles to said shoulderls to form vertical flanges 4 disposed in planes parallel to the body portions of the ends 2 for the purpose of abutting the inner sides of the frame, said 'flanges and shoulders coperating to form right angular seats for the corners C.
Thelower ends of the llanges 4 are bent laterally inward to form horizontal ledges 5 and then continue downwardly to constitute the vertical body portions 6 of a pair of channel-shaped shoe guides 7, the side and lower edges of said body portions being bent laterally outward to form the side flanges 8 of said guides, which lianges are soldered together at their ends. Jllhe open sides of .the guides 7 are Hush with or in the same vertical plane with the flanges 4 and clamping shoes 9 are housed in said guides to be projected into contact with the fra-me F Vby set screws 10, these screws being threaded through the bodies 6 of the guides. By this means, the entire casing 1 may be easily clamped in place yet will be rigidly supported. The upper ends of the shoes 9 contact with cross plates 8a extending between the side flanges 8.
The top, bottom and outer sides of the casing 1 are in the form of a single sheet of metal llsecured by screws 14 to ears 14 struck inwardly from the ends 2. The ends 2 carry brackets 2a which supportthe ends of a spring-wound roller 15 upon which a screen 16 is wound, said screen being adapted to be withdrawn from the open inner side of the casing 1 and to contact with the outer edges of the outermost sash guiding strips S.
`For the purpose of holding the upper portion of the screen 16 against the strips S, a horizontal roller 17 is provided, the ends of said roller being supported by roller brackets 18 which are supported slidably by the ledges 15 and may be adjustable on said ledges by means of set screws 19 so that the roller forces the screen against the strips S. The brackets 18 are each stamped from a single piece of metal and include platelike body portions 20 contacting slidably with the inner sides ofy the guides 7, the outer ends of said body portions being bent laterally to form ears 21 through which the screws 19 pass, said screws being threaded into the outer flanges 8 of said guides, whereby turning of said screws in one direction will slide the brackets 18 toward the strips S against the tension of coiled springs 22 which surround said screws between the guides 7 and the ears 21. Slots 23 are formed in the body portions 2O of the brackets 18 and receive studs 24 rojecting inwardly from the upper ends o the guides 7 to hold said bodies in contact with said guides. The inner ends of the bodies 2O of the brackets 18 have vertical extensions which are bent laterally at 25 and then upward in the form of ears 26, the portions 25 resting slidably on the ledges 5, while the ears 26 rotatably support the roller 17 in any preferred manner.
When the device is applied as shown in the drawings, a rubber strip 27 which is secured to the upper edge of the casing 1 prevents flies and the like from entering between said casing and the upper sash. When, however, the casing isapplied at the upper end of the frame, the strip 27 is not essential but it need not be detached.
The lower end of the screen 16 is secured toa hollow stil'ening member 28 in whose ends are mounted a pair of friction shoes 29 projected by spring pressure and capable of being retracted by the thumb pieces 30. The shoes 29 contact with the inner sides of the frame F when the screen is drawn downwardly to hold the member 28 in contact with the window sill to prevent the entrance of insects at this point.
By constructing the improved device in the manner shown and described, it will not only be comparatively simple and inexpensive, but highly eflicient, serving to exclude flies and the like when either sash is opened. For these reasons, the construction shown constitutes the preferred form of the improved screen but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages.
I claim 1. A window screen comprising a horizontal elongated casing to extend between the sides of a window frame, the endsV of said casing being formed of pieces of sheet .metal whose inner edges are bent at right angles into the. casing to form vertical sto shoulders and then extend at right ang es from said shoulders in planes parallel with the body portions of the ends to form vertical flanges, said flanges and shoulders constituting seats for the corners of the frame, a spring-wound roller in said casing, a screen wound on said roller, and means for securing the casing in place. A window screen comprising a horizontal elongated casing to extend between the sides of a window frame, the ends of said casing being formed of pieces of sheet metal whose inner edges are bent at right angles into the casing to form vertical stop shoulders andthen extend at right angles from said shoulders in planes parallel with the body portions of the ends to form vertical flanges, said langes and shoulders constituting seats for the corners of the frame, channel-shaped shoe guides below said flanges and having their open sides substantially flush with the same, clamping shoes mounted in said guides and means for projecting said shoes into contact with the frame, a spring-wound roller in the casing and a screen wound'on said roller.

A window screen comprising a horizontal elongated casing to extend between the sides of a window frame, the ends of said casing being formed of pieces of sheet metal whose inner edges are bent at right angles into the casing to form vertical stop shoulders and then extend at right angles from said shoulders in planes parallel with the body portions of the ends to' form vertical flanges, said flanges and shoulders constituting seats for thecorners of the frame, the lower ends of the aforesaid flanges being bent horizontally ,inward and then continued4 downwardly to form the body portions of channel-shaped shoe guides, the edges of said body portions being 4bent outwardly to form the sides of said guides, clamping shoes mounted in said guides and means for forcing them into contact with the frame, a spring-wound roller in the casing and a screen wound on said roller.
4. A window screen comprising a horizontal elongated casing to extend between the sides of a window frame, the ends of said casing being formed of pieces of sheet metal whose inner edges are bent at right angles into the casing to form vertical sto shoulders and then extend at right ang es from said shoulders in planes parallel with the body portions of the ends to vform vertical flanges, said flanges and shoulders constituting seats for the corners of the frame, the
lower ends of the aforesaid flanges being bent horizontally inward to form ledges and then continuing downwardly to form channel-shaped guides, clamping shoes mounted in said guides and means for forcing them against the window frame, a spring-wound roller in the casing and a screen wound on said roller, a pair of roller supporting brackets mounted slidably on the aforesaid ledges, means for adjusting said brackets transversely of the casing, and a roller extending between and supported by said brackets for holding the screen against the sash guiding strips of the frame.

A window screen comprisin a horizontal elongated casing to exten between the sides of a window frame, the ends of said casing being formed of pieces of sheet .metal whose inner edges are bent at right aaeaeca 'angles into the casing to form vertical stop shoulders and then extend at right angles from said shoulders in planes parallel with the body portions of the ends to form vertical flanges, said flanges and shouldersconstituting seats for the corners of the frame, the lower ends of the aforesaid flanges being bent horizontally inward to form ledges and then continuing downwardly to form channel-shaped guides, clamping shoes mounted in said guides and means for forcing them against the window frame, a spring-wound roller in the casing and a screen wound on said roller, a pair of roller supporting brackets mounted slidably on the aforesaid ledges, means for adjusting said brackets transversely of the casing, and a roller extending between and supported by said brackets for holding lthe screen against the outermost sash guiding strips of the frame, said brackets being formed of pieces of sheet metal and including body portions having slot and stud connections with the aforesaid shoe .guidesone end of said portions being bent laterally to form ears connected adjustably with the aforesaid shoe guides, said body portions having vertical extensions bent horizontally and then vertically, said horizontal portions resting slidably on the aforesaid ledges and the vertical portions constituting ears to support the last named roller. 4

A window screen comprising a casing i to extend between the sides of a window frame, the ends of said casing having inter- Y nal horizontal ledges, means for` securing the casing in place, a spring-wound roller in said casing and a screen wound on said roller, a pair of roller-carrying brackets supported slidably on the aforesaid ledges, and a roller extending between and carried by said brackets for holding the screen in xed relation with the window.
7. A window screen comprising a casing and means for securing it between the sides of a window frame, the ends of said casing having internal horizontal ledges, a spring wound roller in the casing and a screen wound on said roller, another roller for holding the screen in fixed relation with the window, brackets supporting said last named roller, said brackets being formed of sheet metal havino portions bent horizontally to rest on the ledges and then extending upwardly to form ears between which the last named roller is mounted, and means for adjusting said brackets along the ledges.
8. A window screen comprising a horizontal elongated casing to extend between the sides of the window frame, the ends of wound on said roller, and means for Securing the casing in place.

A window screen comprising a horizontal elongated casing to extend between clamping shoes mounted in saiol` from said shoulders in planes parallel with the body portions of the ends to form vertical lianges, said flanges and shoulders constituting seats for the corners of the frame, the lower ends of said Hanges being extended horizontally inward to form ledges and then continuing downwardly to form the closed sides of channel-shaped shoe guides, clamping shoes in said guides and means for forcing them against the window frame, a spring wound roller in the casing and a screen wound on said roller, a air of roller supporting brackets mounted slldably on the aforesaid ledges, means for adjusting said brackets transversely of the casing and a roller extending between and supported by said brackets for holding the screen against the sash guiding strips of the frame.
