Application February 21, 1942, Serial No.
2 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in window constructions, and more particularly such constructions in which springs are utilized to compensate in part for the weight of the sashes, which is of simple construction, capable of economical production and highly efficient in use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a construction of the character indicated which is compact in form and therefore permits the use of a comparatively narrow window frame.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which Fig, 1 is an interior view of a window construction embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 a similar section taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 4 and showing the sashes in their intermediate positions;
Fig. 4 an enlarged horizontal section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 an enlarged partial section showing the parting strip and adjacent parts on a large scale in which the thickness and separation of the parts has been exaggerated for the sake of clearness.
The embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawing comprises a window frame It having upper and lower sashes II and I2 slidably mounted therein between guide strips I3, [4 and I5. The corner of each sash at each side adjacent the parting strip I4 is provided with a 1ongitudinal notch or groove in which is mounted a sheet metal spring housing in channel form arranged with its open side outwardly as best shown in Fig. 4. Each housing Iii has its side adjacent the parting strip It extended and bent upon itself to form a narrow weather groove ii and is then bent at right angles to form a flange l8 overlying and secured to the adjacent parting strip [4 as shown in Fig. 4. Angular window strips [9 are secured as shown to the sashes and project into the corresponding weather grooves 11, thereby effecting a proper weather seal and at the same time introduce sufficient friction to cooperate with the sash supporting springs iii. The springs 29 are arranged as indicated in the housing It, projecting slightly into shallow recesses 2| formed as indicated in the frame It opposite the housings It. Each of the springs 28 is provided at its top with a hook 22 hooked over the upper edge of the corresponding housing It and at its lower end with a hook 23 engaging a (C1. zit-575) bracket 24 secured to the corresponding sash whereby the tension of the springs 20 tends to bear or compensate for the weight of the sashes and thereby facilitate manipulations thereof. The friction between the weather strips l9 and the sides of the grooves I7 is made sufficient to resist the automatic action of the springs when the sashes are lowered and thereby cause said sashes to remain in adjusted positions which will be readily understood.
By this arrangement, a simple and effective window construction is provided which is capable of economical production, is highly efficient in use and which may be mounted in a comparatively narrow window frame. The combination and arrangement of parts is a simple and effective one for the purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying the invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed but desire to avail myself of such variations or modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A window construction comprising a frame;
a sash slidable therein between guide strips, said sash having a longitudinal recess in its corner adjacent one of said strips; a sheet metal spring housing in channel form positioned in said recess with its open side outward with reference to the sash, the side of said housing adjacent said one strip being extended and bent inwardly parallel to itself to form a narrow weather groove b tween the housing and said one strip, the end of said extended housing side being bent at substantially a right angle to form a securing element to rest against the inner face of said one strip; means fastening said securing element to said one strip; a sheet metal weather strip in angle form having one leg secured to the inner wall of said recess and the other leg slidably engaging said groove; and a spring in said housing connected with the sash and the frame.
2. The construction specified in claim .1, in which there are two of said sashes slidable in the frame and said one strip constitutes a parting strip between said sashes, the recess in each sash being arranged adjacent the parting strip between them, one of said spring housings being provided for each sash and secured to the parting strip, each of said sashes carrying one of said weather strips engaging the corresponding weather groove, and a spring is provided in each housing connected with the corresponding sash.
