To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL L. HAnRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of l ansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains acles, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a drinking fountain for use in public places or stores, for supplying drinking water and which also contemplates a waste receptacle to receive waste matter.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a fountain which will present a neat and effective appearance and which is artistically designed and constructed to supply drinking water, and which further includes a cuspidor for perto eXpectorate, thus having the expectorant received in a suitable drain, with means for keeping the receptacle adapted to receive the expectorantin a clean and sanitary condition.

The invention still further comprehends the provision of a fountain having a receptacle adaptedto receive waste paper and waste 7 matter, and thus it will be apparent that the drinking fountain, particularly when in a public place, will present a device which not only contemplates the use of individual sanitary drinking cups, but which also will do away to a great extent, with persons eX- pectorating on the street and, furthermore, presents a structure in which persons will place waste paper and waste matter rather than throw the same upon the highway.

Still further embodiments of the invention reside in a drinking fountain, parts of which can be devoted to advertising purposes and the like.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fountain; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken through the fountain; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail plan view; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 55 in Fig. 3.

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a base or pedestal 10 supporting a substantially hollow body 11 on the upper end of which is carried a bowl 12 constituting a cuspidor, the body 11 having a side thereof formed with a door 13 communicating with the interior of the body 11 and which provides a waste paper compartment 14, suitable openings in the nature of chutes 15 being provided in order that the waste paper may be dropped into the compartment 14. drain pipe 16 has connection with thebowl 12 and passes downwardly through the waste paper compartment 14 and also passing through the waste paper compartment 14 is a. water supply pipe 17 having a suitable valve 18 preferably arranged within the base 10, access to the valve 1lgeing'had by a suitable closure 19 on the ase.

A plurality of opposed arches 20 are supported on the bowl 12 and project upwardly to support a second hollow body 21, the upper end of which carries a receptacle 22 in which gold fish can be kept, or plants or other ornamental bodies or devices can be arranged. A plurality of opposed faucets 23 are supported on the receptacle 22 and project exteriorly thereof, said faucets having connection with the upper end of the pipe 17 and which passes through one of the arches 20, said arch being made hollow to 17 as mentioned and valves 18 and which, when opened, will permit the water to flow therefrom.

Cup supporting and drain members 25 are secured to or formed with the body 21 and arranged immediatelv beneath the faucets 23 so that a cup supported on one of the members 25 will be in position to receive water on. The cup and drain supporting members 25 communicate ith a which, passing the body 21, communicates with the other arch 20 which is preferably made hollow in the nature of a pipe- The lower end of this arch communicates with a circular perforated spray pipe 28 which is preferably formed along the rim of the bowl 12 and which may be also formed bybending the upper edge of the bowlaround in the nature of a pipe.

Now it will be apparent that when a person has partaken of the water from the fau I leading to a sewer or 7 whereby which may have been previously the faces 28, from which it will spray intothe bowl 12,

thus cleaning the bowl of any exp'ectorant discharged thereinto. The drain water which cleans the bowl and the expectorant will then be washed downwardly in the drain pipe 16 and can be carried oh? by any suitable pipe having connection with the drain pipe and the like. I

Thus it will be seen that with a drinking fountain of the character described the water which is not'used for drinking purposes,vwill, through the uniqueconstruction of'thedevice, be used as a means for lzeeping the cuspidor in a clean and sanitary condition. The usual sanitary drinking cups which are used and which are adapted to be discarded after they have been once used, are, after they have been used, dropped into one of the chutes 15 to be received in the waste paper compartmentlti formed by the body 11. p 7

The faces of the body 11 which are indicated by the numeral 29 are preferably covered with glass or some dium, and can be readily employed foradvertising purposes to receive suitable signs or inscriptions and, similarly, portions of of the body 21, indicated by the numeral 30, can be used for advertising purposes, other portions of the faces of the body 30 being preferably, in the nature of mirrors, as indicated by the numeral 31, the entire fountain, when complete, will present a neat and effective appearance.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
