UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ROBERTS, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Ronnn'rs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county'of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in drinking fountains especially de si 'ned for use in schools, public parks and ot ier public places.
The object of the invention is to provide a drinking fountain of this character which is adapted to serve a large number of persons at the same time without the least crowding and which is also sanitary and indestructible and attractive and ornamental in appearance.
Another object is to provide a drinking fountain having the foregoing advantages and capacities and wherein the bubble cups and pipes for supplying the water thereto are completely and quickly drained when p the fountain is not in use thereby precluding the possibility of water freezing in parts of the fountain and damaging or injuring the same.
A still further object is to provide a fountain of this character which is comparatively simple in construction and adapted to be maiuifactured at a comparatively slight cost from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available and wherein the parts are readily and easily accessible for pur poses of cleaning, adjustment, replacement and repair. 7
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a view thereof in diametrieal vertical section;
Figure 3 is a detail view, partly in elevation and;v partly in section, showing-the piping empliiyed for supplying the hubhle cups w tlfr-water; a 1
DRINKING FOUNTAIN.
Application filed September 24, 1923. Serial No. 664,581.
Figure a is a perspective view illustrating the construction of the underside of the bowl;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view, illustrating the stand pipe and certain of its associated parts; and
Figure 6 is a detail view in vertical section, showing the construction and mounting of the bubble cup.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates generally a pedestal which is made up of a base block 11 supported on a concrete or other suitable foun- 'dation, a tapering block or pillar l2 arranged above and supported upon the base block and a cap block 13 surmounting the tapering block 12. The blocksll, 12 and 13 are provided with centrally disposed and vertically alined openings through which a drain pipe 14 extends. The'drain pipe 14 is of less diameter than that of the openings through which it extends and the space between the outer wall of the drain pipe and the walls of'the openings is slashed with a rich concrete mixture whereby the drain pipe is held in place and a very solid union is had between the blocks making up the pedestal. As shown in Figure 2 the contacting faces of the blocks of the pedestal.
are inclined and this also tends to hold the blocks in position and against displacement and it is to be understood that the blocks may be bonded together by concrete or otherwise secured together if found de sirable' The cap block 13 is centrally recessed, as at 15, and in this recess a drip plate 16 is fitted and secured, the drip plate having a depending nipple 17 fitted in the upper end of the drain pipe 14.
A bowl designated generally at 20,-is supported on the cap block 13 and includes a bottom 21 and a heavy rim 22. It is to be understood that the pedestal and bowl is preferably constructed of concrete which. is suitably reinforced and preferably granite or marble chips are used in the eo1'1'1po'sition of the bowl and the pedestal so as to permit of either a bush-hammered or polished finish andthereby enhance the attractive appearance and ornamental qualities of the fountain. The upper surface of the bottom 21 of the bowl slopes toward the center thereof as clearly shown in Figure 2 and "at the ltlt) fountain. Moreover the short cylinder 43 provides a trap or collecting basin for sedi- 1nent,sand or the like liable to be contained in the water, and precludes the possibility of the same stopping up the fountain. Additional traps are provided by means of the chambers 53 in the Ts provided for connecting each of the vertical tubes of each bubble cup to its water supply pipe. The weight of the bowl and the connection of the feed pipe has been found to be suficient to hold the bowl in place but obviously other means may be employed for this purpose if considered desirable.
The fountain is sanitary, practical and affords drinking facilities for a relatively large number of people at the same time.
I claim:
1.. A drinking fountain including a pedestal having a central vertical opening, a drain pipe in said opening, a bowl supported on said pedestal and including a bottom and a rim, the bottom having a central drain opening communicating with the drain pipe and having its upper surface sloping tosaid central drain opening, a plurality of bubble cups arranged in the bowl around the rim and discharging into the bowl, the underside of the bottom of the bowl being provided with a plurality of slots, and pipes for supplying water to said bubble cups arranged in said slots.
2. A drinking fountain including a pedestal having a central vertical opening, a drain pipe in said opening, a bowl supported on said pedestal and including a bottom and a rim, the bottom having a central drain opening communicating with the drain pipe and having its upper surface sloping to said central drain opening, a plurality of bubble cups arranged in the bowl around the rim and discharging into the bowl, the underside of the bottom of the bowl being provided with a plurality of slots, pipes for supplying water to said bubble cups arranged in said slots, a central stand pipe communicating with all of said pipes and extending upwardly of said central drain opening and disposed centrally of said bowl, and a perforated cap for the upper end of the stand pipe.
drinking fountain including a pedestal having a central vertical opening, a drain pipe in said opening, a bowl supported on said pedestal and including a bottom and a rim, the bottom having a central drain opening communicating with the drain pipe and having its upper surface sloping to said central drain opening, a plurality of bubble cups arranged in the bowl around the rim and discharging into the bowl, the underside of the bottom of the bowl being provided with a plurality of slots, pipes for supplying water to said bubble cups arranged in said slots, a central stand pipe communicating with all of said pipes and extending upwardly of said central d'ain opening and disposed centrally of said bowl, a perforated cap for the up per end of the stand pipe, and a dome surrounding the stand pipe and held in position by said cap, said dome having openings around its lower end to admit of free flow of water to said drain opening.
