Description

C. 0. BARNES.
PRESSING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.20. 1914.

I Mr M M! INVENTOR- W TNESSES {1 x 2 Allorney TH-E NORRIS PETERS CQ. PHOTOJJTHOH WASHING TON. D. (.2
Ff i'Ghi.
CHARLES O. BARNES, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PRESSING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES O. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Pressing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pressing devices and more particularly "to means for pressing neck-ties,-the obyect of the invention being to provide a (dB/V106 of this character which shall comprlse a 1mmmum number of parts; which shall be easy to manipulate, and which shall be operative to eflectually press a neck-tie wlthout the use of heat and without necessity for know edge or skill on the part of the user, in the use of laundry appliances. D
With this and other Ob ects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out 1n the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; F gure 1 is a plan view of the-blank from whichthe body of the device is formed; Fig. 2 1s a side elevation of the body portion of the device; Fig. 3 is an end view of the same; Fig. 4: is a plan view of the presser member; Fig. 5 is an edge view of the presser member; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device with a necktie in place therein; Fig. 7 1s a longitudinal sectional view and Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view, showing the rel ative positions of the parts when the device is 1n use.
1 represents the base or body member of the device, and 2 the presser member. The base or body member comprises a plate 3 (preferably made wider at one end than at the other so that it shall approximate the general shape of a folded neck-tie), havmg recesses 4: at its respective ends to form tongues 5, and lugs 6,the latter being located at the four corners of the blank shown in Fig. 1. The metal of the blank or plate 3 is bent upwardly on the dotted lines 7 so as to form upturned flanges 8 at the side edges of the device, and the tongues 5 at the ends of the plate are slightly curved down wardly to avoid injurious conflict of the neck-tie with the plate. The lugs 6, which Specification of Letters Patent.

by the recessed portions 4.
The presser 2 consists of a bow or arch shaped spring, made preferably of thin sheet metal and havlng its respective ends slightly upturned to form lips 9. Each of these lips may be somewhat less in length than the wldth of the end of the presser spring from which said lip projects. The spring presser has the same general shape from end to end as that of the body portion 1, so that it may neatly enter the side flanges of the latter. In using the device, the neck-tie 10 is first placed in the body portion 1 between the side flanges 8, so as to lie upon the plate 3, with the inner face of the tie uppermost. A strip 11 of moistened material; such for example, as thin card board or paper, is then laid upon the tie, and then the other wrinkled portion of the tie will be laid over the damped material, with the inside face of the tie next to said material. The spring presser will next be placed in position, and in accomplishing this, one end of said presser will be inserted under the lugs 6 at one end of the device, and then the presser will be pressed downwardly onto the tie between the flanges 8, and the other end of said presser will be inserted under the lugs 6 at the other end of the device. With the use of the bow or arch-shaped spring presser, applied as above explained, the tie will be pressed uniformly from end to end of the device, and after a few hours in the device, the tie will become effectually pressed and all wrinkles will be eliminated, after which the presser 2 and the tie may be removed.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not desire to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a pressing device, the combination with a body member having engaging devices at its respective ends for a presser member, of a presser member consisting of a spring plate bowed from end to end and adapted near its respective ends to engage said engaging devices, whereby materialmay be pressed between 's'aidbody member bow-spring presser member, and means at 1 spec ve end the bedy mber is ceive the presser member to press material Eetween said presser member and body mem- 3.. A'pressing device, comprising a body member havingrside flanges and engaging means for a presser member at respective ends of said flanges, and a bowed presser member to enter between said side flanges and project under said engaging means, whereby said bowed presser may be flattened body member.

to .press material between itself and said device comprising a body 1 war ily pmiee ine ugs-at the ends of Said flanges, and a bowed spring presser to enter between said flanges and under said lugs,
whereby-"said presser will be flattened to press material between itself and the body member.
separable resilient bowed plate to enter with in said body member and means on the body member to engage respeetive ends of said bowed plate, wherebythe resilience of said plate will apply pressure to the tie Within In testimony whereofllhave signedthis specification in the presence of; two subscribing witnesses. 7' r} V GHARLES .Q..BARNES..
