A Specification of Letters Patent.

To accomplish this result it has been customary to slit the edge of the sheet of material and form an overlapping joint. This construction has been found bulky and the overlapping edges which :are produced catch upon objects "oftentimes resulting in the tearing of the material out of which the shield is constructed. The overlapping also produces a double thickness of material which reduces transparency. As even the obstruction of a hair is annoying it is obvious'the double thickness is likewise objectionable.

My invention is designed to overcome this objection by the use of a joint which does not overlap, thus not reducing transparency and thus obviating any protuberances,

. which might catch and cause trouble.

By this improvement goggles of simple construction and light weight are produced for use out of doors or wherever there is danger of injury to the eyes from flying particles.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail of one of the eye pieces before its edge has been bent and fastened and Fig. 3 is a perspective of a detail showing one of the eye pieces after its edge has been bent and fastened.

In the drawing A and B indicate a pair of'shields or eye pieces, each member of which is of elliptical shape and has an we tension 2 at one end. The extension 2 on the members A. and B are secured together in overlapping condition, such as by a tubular rivet 3, so that the shields may be turned on the pivot, thus formed, and either folded together or extended while in substantially a single plane. Those portions of the shields lying between the bodies of the members and also near the outer ends have triangular pieces removed to form darts or spaces and the edges-{t of each dart are brought together by'bending the material of the eye piece until they meet and fastened such as by clips 5 secured through openings 6 lying adjacent to the edges 4:. In this manner the edges of the darts do not overlap, but are joined evenly, that is their faces do not overlap and produce a double thickness of material but rest in substantially the same plane or line of curvature. As many of these joints are produced around the edges of the shield as are desirable to form a cup shaped shield which will stand out away from and around the eye leaving the eye lashes untouched. The shields may be made out of any suitable flexible material such for example as coloredor colorless celluloid. /Vhen folded the shields of each pair nest together. and the joints do not protrude and catch. The upper portions of the shields are formed with ventilating openings such as 7 and the outer ends of the shields have secured thereto a flexible elastic fastener 8 for holding the shields in position over the eyes and on the head of the user.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. An eye protector, comprising, two flexible shields overlapping centrally and pivotally united to fold in substantially a single plane, each of said shields having its outer edge formed with a dart and the adjacent edges of said dart being united evenly.

2. An eye protector, consisting of a flexible shield having its edge formed with a dart and means for holding the adjacent edges of said dart evenly united.

3. An eye protector, comprising, in combination, two flexible transparent shields name to this specification, in the presence overlapping centrally and pivotally united of tWo subscribing Witnesses,
