Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Application filed. March 28, 1914. Serial No. 827,963.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LOUIS SoI-IMIDT and SAMUL BRUNSTIEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Ocean, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Sash Lifts and Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in operating devices for window sashes.
An object of the invention is to provide a sash operating means whereby the sash may be quickly raised or lowered and positively held in such positions.
In the drawing ;-F igure 1 is perspective view of a window frame and sash with our attachment in place thereon, parts of said frame and sash being broken away to more clearly disclose the operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the sash frame with our operating device in place thereon. Fig. 3 is a fragmental plan view of awindow frame partly in section, showing the locking means in position.
A window sash 1 is provided upon one of its edges with a rack bar 2, and this sash is inserted in the usual manner in a window frame.
Mounted on the rear side of the frame 3 on the axle 4 is a cog wheel 5 which extends through an aperture in the window frame and engages the rack bar 2. Ihis axle & has an extension 7 which extends through an aperture 8 in the face of the window frame. This extension 7 has formed thereon shoulders.
hen it is desired to raise or lower a window, a handle is inserted through the aperture 8 and engaged with the extension 7 and the cog wheel rotated, by which rotation and by virtue of the engagement of the cog wheel with the rack bar 2, the window is controlled. In order that the said window sash may be locked in any open position we have provided the following locking mechanism: Pivoted to the face of the window frame and to the rear side thereof is a lever 11 having thereon a cam surface 12. This lever extends across the extension 7 of the axle 1 and the cam surface 12 is in engagement with the said axle. Attached to the other end of the lever 11. is a rod 13. Pivoted to the rear side of the frame parallel with the axle is a rod member 14 which has an extension 15 integral therewith to which the rod 13 is attached. Extending from the rod 14: is also a plate member 16 having on its end a pawl 17 which is adapted to be thrown into engagement with the teeth on the 00 wheel 5. On the extremity of the rod 1 1 opposite to that to which the member 16 is attached is a handle 18.
In operating this device, the operating handle is inserted in the aperture 8 of the window frame and engaged with the extension 7, the handle is then turned and by the engagement thereof with the cam surface 12 of the lever 11, the free end of the said lever is raised, which in turn lowers the extensions 15 on the rod 16: and the pawl 1? is thus thrown out of engagement with the teeth of the wheel 5. Further movement of the handle will raise the window sash.
Inasmuch as the handle is detachable from the extension 7 and it may at any time become lost, it is desirable to provide additional means for releasing the pawl, and for this reason the handle 18 is provided. By turning the said handle and thus rotating the rod 14 the pawl will be disengaged from the wheel 5 and the sash may be then raised manually.
From the above description it may be seen that we have provided a device for readily controlling the raising and lowering of the window sash and for locking the same in any one of its raised or lowered positions.
We do not wish to be limited to the specific structure shown, but only so far as is necessary by the claims.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a sash, a rack bar secured on one edge of said sash, a sash frame having an aperture therein, a cog wheel pivoted on the rear side thereof and extending through said aperture and into engagement with the rack bar, means for operating the cog wheel, a lever operated by said means, a locking pawl operated by said lever to lock said cog wheel against motion, means connected to said pawl to operate the same independently of the cog actuating means.
2. In a device of the class described, means for raising or lowering a window, means for locking said means, means to actuate said first mentioned means and to release the locking means, and independent means for actuating said locking means.
3. In a device of the class described, means for raising a window comprising a rack bar and a cog wheel, a lever, a rod con nected thereto, a pivoted member having an extension engaging said rod, an arm integral with said member, a pawl on said arm arranged to engage said cog wheel and means to operate said lever to disengage the pawl from the said wheel, and independent means to actuate the pawl.
4. In a device of the class described, a rack bar adapted to be secured to a Window sash, a shaft revolubly mounted in the sash frame, a cog wheel secured to the shaft, a rod pivotally mounted in the frame, a pawl secured to the rod and adapted to engage the cog wheel, a lever pivoted to the frame between its ends, and operatively connected to the rod, an enlargement having a cam face thereon formed on the lever and adapted to rest on the shaft, said enlargement adapted to return the lever and pawl to their initial position.
5. In a device of the class described, a
rack bar adapted to be secured to a window sash, a shaft revolubly mounted on the sash frame, a cog wheel secured to the shaft, a pawl mounted within the sash frame and adapted to engage the cog therein, an operating handle slidably mounted on the shaft, and means connected to the pawl and operative, and means secured to the said pawl and engageable with the first men.- tioned means to simultaneously operate the pawl and throw said second mentioned means out ofoperative position.
7. In a device of the class described, rack bars arranged to be secured to the'window sashes at different points independently, cog wheels arranged to be secured to the sash frame at different points and independently of each other, pawls engageable with said cog wheels and mounted within the sash frames, means for actuating thepawls and cog wheels and independent means for rendering the pa'wls inoperative.
