UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PATRICK F. VHITF., OF ITESTERN PORT, MARYLAND. y
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,238, dated March 25, 1890.
Application tiled January 22, l890 Serial No. 337,696. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK F. VHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Western Port, in the county of Alleghany and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
My present invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners, and is designed more particularly for use in connection with carwindows, whereby the sash and shutters of the same may be readily adjusted at suitable heights to attain the desired degree of light or ventilation in the simplest and best possible manner; and my improvements consist, essentially, in the novel details of construction and general arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of a sash-fastener embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same, showing the parts in a locked position; and Fig. 3 a similar view with the parts unlocked and ready for operation.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several iigures of the drawings. j In carrying out my invention a suitable rack-barAis secured to one side of the frame of the window and is preferably let into the wood-work of the same, so as to be concealed from view. The case or receptacle B is secured to the side of the sash in such manner that the teeth of the pinion C, projecting from the side of the case or receptacle B, engage or mesh with the teeth of the rack-bar A. The upper part of the case B is provided with a circular recess a, opening out to one side, and in which is journaled the pinion C, the teeth of which project slightly over upon one side of the case, as shown.
-pinion C to prevent the 4movement of the same, thus keeping the parts in a locked position. The lower portion of the block D terminates in a cylindrical base d, which passes through a suitable opening in the bottom of the case B,where it is provided with a ring e, as shown.
To one side of the recess Z) and opening into the same is provided a recess g, having a pivoted lever E arranged therein, the inner end of which engages with a notch 7L in the side of the block D, to depress the same at will and thus release the spurs or projections c from engagement with the teeth of the pinion C, to permit of its operation within the teeth of the rack-bar A.
Beneath the lever E is secured a suitable spring F, the free end of which engages with the notch 7L in the side of themovable block D, to keep the spurs or projections c of the same in contact with the teeth of the pinion.
Upon the outer port-ion of the case B and to one side thereof is secured a stationary and projecting thumb-piece K, while directly below the same is arranged the thumb-piece K of the pivoted lever E, the object of which is to provide an easy leverage for the ready manipulation of the parts.
In case it is desired to use my improved mechanism in connection with high windows, I provide a suitable roller m, which is designed to be attached to the lower part of the sash, so that a cord or chain n may be used' to draw down the movable block D from contact with the teeth of the pinion C, to insure of the proper operation. of the parts.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l.. A sash-fastener consisting of the case or receptacle B, provided with the pinion C, spring F, and ease B, substantially as and for Io engagement-block D, spring F, lever E, and the purpose specified.
thumb-pieces K and K in Combination with In testimony whereof I a'fiix my signature in the rack-bar A, substantially as and for the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
purpose specified.
2. In a sash-fastener, the movable block D, PATRICK F WHITE [L S'] provided with spurs or projections c, cyiin- Witnesses: drical base d, having ring,` e, and notches h h', P. J. ROGERS, in combination with the pinion C, lever E, W. H. FREDBOCK.
