HAME AND TRACE CONNECTOR.
Application filedDecember 2, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP S. LASSELL, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame and Trace Connectors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hame and trace connectors and will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a hame having attached thereto a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device with the trace loop detached; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a View similar to Fig. 3 showing the trace loop engaged with the hame staple.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a hame to the forward face of which the device embodying the present invention is secured. This comprises an elongated staplelike member having at its ends integral portions adapted to be passed through openings in the body of the hame and secured thereto by upsetting the free ends, or in any other suitable manner. Said staple-like member includes a hollow body having solid end walls and oppositely inclined sides 3, 4:. Each side wall of said body is provided with a series of openings 5, those in one wall being directly opposite and in alinement with those in the other. The openings 5 are so spaced that the two hooks 6 at one end of the trace loop 7 are adapted to pass through adjoining openings and engage the top bar 8 of the staple. By providing a series of openings 5 in each side wall of the body of the staple the trace loop may be adjusted longitudinally of the hame so as to adapt the device for different animals, etc. The lower end of the staple is separated slightly from the lower end wall of the hollow body and a ring 9 is secured to the fastener as shown.
The trace loop 7 is held in engagement with the body of the staple-like member by the action of a spring-plate 10 resting against the face of the hame within said hollow body. As shown, this plate is relatively long and narrow being slightly less Specification of Letters Patent.

in width than the distance separating the side walls 3, 4 adjacent the hame and of substantially the length of the interior of the hollow body. Said plate is bowed or curved outwardly longitudinally so that normally it will extend across the openings 5 midway of the length of the body at some distance from the face of the hame. The ends of said plate are bent or deflected slightly upward in a direction opposite that in which the body of the plate is bowed so that a smooth contact surface is provided between the hame and plate adjacent each end of the latter. The length of the plate 10 being slightly less than the length of the chamber or space in which it is arranged, the plate is permitted a limited longitudinal movement when depressed by the engagement of the trace loop 7 with the staple member. The parts are so proportioned that when the loop is operatively engaged with the hame it will be pressed close against the top bar 8 by the action of the spring-plate. The plate is not rigidly fastened to the hame or any other part of the device, but is held in its proper position by reason of its shape and relation to the side walls of the hollow body.
The manner of using and advantages of the device constructed as shown in the drawing and hereinbefore described will be apparent.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a hame, a staple secured to and extending longitudinally of the hame and including a hollow body having its side walls provided with transversely alined openings, an elongated, longitudinally bowed, spring plate confined within the body of the staple and arranged to have a limited bodily movement therein in the direction of its length, and a trace connection arranged to engage the staple through the opening in either side wall of the body thereof and to be held insuch engagement by the action of the spring plate.
2. The combination of a hame, a staple secured to and extending longitudinally of the hame and including a hollow body having its side walls provided with transversely alined openings, an elongated, longitudilimited bodily longitudinal movem nally bowed, spring plate confined Within the body of the staple in contact With the slightly in a direction opposite that in which it is bowed and being arranged to havea ent with:
in the staple body, and a trace connection arranged to engage the'staple -bodythrough v Copiesot this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressin iggton, D. G.
