WINDOW-SASI-I LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, i915.
Application filed January 21, 1915. Serial No. 3,608.
T0 all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. ANDER soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in window sash lock, the object being to provide a simple, strong, and durable device for locking the window sash of passenger cars up or down or in intermediate positions, and which, when in place, will be approximately flush with the -sash rail to which it is secured so as not to interfere with the movements of the curtain, and which will also act as a hand hold for lifting the sash.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of my improvement applied to the sash and showing also part of the car bady; Fig. 2 is a view in section on line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a view of the lock showing the bolt retracted; Fig. 4: is a view in section on the line H of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view in transverse section on the line 5&5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a view in section on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
l represents the lock carrying plate, secured to the outer face of the lower rail of the sash. This plate which is comparatively thin, may be secured to the face of the sash rail, or it may be set into a recess in the rail so as to rest flush with the face of the rail. IVhen secured to the faceof ,the rail, it does not project sufliciently to interfere with the free movement of the curtain. It is provided centrally with a slot 2 extending lengthwise and of a length suficient to receive comfortably, the ends of three fingers of an adult hand. rlfhis plate is also provided on its rear face with the two parallel integral ribs 8, located respectively near the upper and lower edges of the plate, and extending throughout the greater part of the length of the latter'. Each rib 3 is provided with a bore l extending from its front end to near its rear end, and each is also provided on its side adjacent the other rib with a slot 5, extending from the open front end of the bore to the closed rear end.
6 is the linger piece or actuating slide provided at its front end with a threaded socket 7 to receive a threaded end of the bolt 8, which in the particular instance is a cylindrical rod.
Located within the hollow ribs 3, are the springs Sa which bear at their rear ends against the rear closed ends of the bores 4, and at their front ends against the shoulders 9 formed on the side flanges l0 of the linger piece or slide 6, the shoulders being formed by widening the flanges 10 adjacent their front ends. The side flanges 10 of the inger piece or slide, rest within the slots 5 of the ribs 4L, with the front ends or shoulders 9 of said ribs in advance of, and in engagement with the front ends of the springs, so that the latter normally tend to hold the bolt projected, or in its locking position. Y
Ihe finger piece on slide 6, is recessed on its outer face, the said recess corresponding in length and width to the slot in the face plate, and is of a depth suflicient for the entrance of the ends of the lingers of the operator. When the bolt is projected, the recess in the slide yG is partly covered by the face plate but suflicient of it is exposed or in line with the slot in the face plate, for the entrance of the ends of say two lingers, so that that it may be readily moved in a direction to retract the bolt and disengage it from the hole in the window frame, in which the bolt enters when locking the window. After the inger piece has been moved in a direction to retract the bolt, the whole of the recess will be in line with the slot thus permitting the operator to insert the end. of another linger, which will not only operate to hold the bolt retracted, but also give suflicient grip or finger hold for lifting the sash. Aafter 'the sash has been lifted and thefingers withdrawn, the bolt immediately shoots to projected or locking position.
In assembling the parts, the springs are introduced through the open kends of the bores after which the flanges of the finger piece or slide are passed into the open ends of the slots. The shoulders 9 on the flanges engaging the springs compress them sufiiciently for the shoulders to enter the slots and bore, after which the parts are locked together by the pins l1 which close the outer ends of the bores ofthe ribs. rlhe window frame with which this lock coperates, may have holes 12 located to receive the bolt when the window is closed and also when open fory the purpose of holding the sash up.
The rail of the sash is recessed to receive the ribs and finger plates or slide, and it and the stile of the sash are provided with a hole for the passage of the bolt,`so that when applied to a window, the face and finger plates are the only parts exposed at the front. Y i
' The device is exceedingly simple and compact, and being of few parts, is not liable to getout of order.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and describedv without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence l would have it understood that l do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement ofl parts shown and described; but
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A sash lock consisting of a face plate having a slot extending lengthwise the same,
a linger piece mounted at the rear of said.
plate and "having a recess of substantially the size as the slot inthe face plate, a bolt carried by said linger piece and a spring for actuating the latter in one direction,
2. A sash lock consisting of aface plate having a slot therein and provided on its rear face with supports for the finger piece,
a linger piece mounted to slidein said sup-V ports and provided with a recess n the plane Y of the slot in the face plate, a bolt carried by said linger piece and springsV for moving the latter in a direction to carrykone end of the recess in the linger piece under the face plate. 1 l
3. A sash lock consisting of a face plate having a slot therein, v and provided on. its rear facev with hollow slotted ribs, a finger piece having a recess in the plane of the Y Vslot in the faceplate and side flanges restpiece and springs carried by the face plate and bearing against shoulders on the finger piece for moving the latter in one direction.
ln testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
