To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LAWTON NOR- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVaterbui-y, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in sash fasteners of the type which are adapted to positively lock the sashes in closed or partly closed position.
In a number of features my fastener is similar to the fastener shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 688,003 granted to me December 3, 1901.
The particular object of this invention is to provide simple and convenient means whereby the fastener may be positively locked in its closed position; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited. in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a case 2 and cap 3 similar to that in my previous patent, the parts being connected together and adapted to be secured to the up per rail of the lower sash for engagement with the side of the window casing or with the side of the upper sash. As in my previous patent I employ a locking lever 22 mounted upon a pivot 23, which it will be noted by Fig. 3 of the drawings, does not extend through the cap and case but is em- Specification of Letters Patent.

bedded in the adjacent faces thereof. This locking lever has a nose 4 projecting outward through the front of the case and adapted to enter a socket 5 mounted in the window frame or in the side of the upper sash. This locking lever has a finger piece 6 and rearwardly and downwardly extending tail 7 adapted to bear upon a shoulder -8 formed on the upper edge of a sliding finger-piece 9. The locking lever is normally thrown forward by a spring'lO bearing at one endin the case, and at the opposite end against the beveled surface 11 formed for it on the lever. The sliding finger-piece 9 is normally drawn inward by means of a spring 12 bearing at one end against a head 13 on a stem 14 projecting forward from the sliding finger-piece 9 and an abutment shoulder 15 formed in the case. In this slide is a transverse hole 16 screw threaded to receive a screw plug 17 which is shorter than the thickness of the slide. Extending through this plug is a pin 18 corresponding in length to the thickness of the finger-piece or slide 9. This plug has a screw driver slot 19 which is divided by the upper end of the pin. When the plug is turned flush with the outer face of the slide the slide may be readily moved back and forth so as to draw it out of the path of the tail of the locking lever, allowthe locking lever to be moved out of engagement with one of the sockets 5, and when released the slide will be drawn inward by a spring 12. When, however, it is desired to lock the window in the closed or partly closed position, the plug 17 will be given a half turn inward so as to force the inner end of the pin 18 beyond the inner wall of the slide 9, and in line with an abutment 20 formed in the case; and the position of the abutment is such that the pin will strike it before the shoulder 8 is drawn from beneath the tail 7 of the locking lever so that the slide cannot be withdrawn sufficiently to permit the locking lever to be moved. To unlock the window the plug will be turned in the reverse direction bringing the face flush with the side of the slide, and hence both ends of the pin will be flush with the sides of the slide, permitting the slide to move freely. It will be understood that the cap is formed with a clearance notch 21 allowing access to the plug to permit it to be turned with a suitably formed screw driver, and it is to be noted that the upper edge of the notch extends over the plug nearly into line with the slot 19 and prevents the plug from working out and also that when the slide "is locked it must be withdrawn slightly to expose the end of the slot 19 for the insertion of a screw driver.
