Description

Letters Patent No. 113,622, ma April 11, 1871.
lI WIPROVEMENT IN cAsKs Fon PASTE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making paxt of the same.
To all Vwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BnAUNHoLD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementy in Gasks for Paste, dto.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a y full, clear, and exact description thereof which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specitication, in which drawm ghigure 1 represents a vertical central section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a side view` of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates toa caskprovided at one end with a tapering seat to receive a head with a tapel-ing projection' fitting into `the said seat, and held in position by a swivel-bar and cams in such a manner that, by means of said fastening, the head of the cask can be convenieutlytaken off.
To prevent the head from springing or warping, and to preserve the lproper relation between the ta.- pering projection of said head and its seat, the head is constructed of two ormore layers of wood, the grain of one layer running crosswise to that of the adjoining layer.
, The letter A designates a cask which is provided at one end with a tapering seat, c, to'receive a corre'- spondingly-tapering projection, b, on the inner surface of the head B. A
This head is by preference made of two or more layers of wood, the grains of 'the several layers running crossvvise to each other, so that said head is prevented from warping. v
On the out'side of the head is secured a bar, c,
lwhich swivels on a central pivot, d, and the ends of which can bemade `to catch under cam-hooks e secured to the cask, as .shown in gs. 1, 2, and 310i' the drawing. V v W 4 If thehead B is put op the cask and the ends of the swivel-bar are forced under the cam-hooks e, the projection b is firmly pressed down in the seat a and the cask is closed. Y
If desired, a packing ofaIndia rubber or other snitable material maybe applied to the seat a orto the projection b, to facilitate the operation of producing an air-tight joint.
With the hooks e is combined a latch, f, which can be made toI catch over one end of the swivel-bar, so as to retain the same in position and prevent the head from getting unfastened spontaneously.` Y
lhis cask is intended particularly for the purpose of containing paste or othermaterial `which is manufactured in one place and used in another.
When the cask arrives in its placeof destination the head can be' readily takenoii' and easy access isv v had to the contents of the cask; and if -the cask isv empty the head is replaced, the ca'skis returned to the place where the paste or other material is manufactured, and it can vbe easilyrelilled and closed without requiring any labor; while with casks of the ordinary construction it is necessary to'employ a cooper to provide the casks with fresh heads every time they are returned.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Witnesses W. HAUFF, E. E. KAs'raNnUEa.
