Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 3, 1912. Serial No. 734,770.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. DAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northfield, in the county of Rice, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in syringes, and particularly to a rectal syringe.
The principal object of this character is to provide a simple device of this character which combines all of the advantages of the fountain, the pump, and bulb syringes.
Another object is to provide a simple and convenient device of this character which can be easily operated.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a device made in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional View on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompany ingdrawings, 10 represents a vertical tubular tank slidably supported on a flared base 11, said bottom being provided with a screw plug 12 for draining the water from the tank when desired.
Mounted on the upper end of the tank 10 is an air tight chamber 13 the upper wall of said chamber being depressed to form a seat for the person using the device. Connected to one side of the chamber 13 is a nipple 141 to which is connected a rubber hose 15 leading to an air pump 16. This pump is used to force air into said chamher. In the bottom of the air chamber 13 and communicating with the tank 10 is an air escape opening 17. Mounted in the side wall of the chamber 13 is a springpressed valve 18, closing the opening 17 and having a stem 19 and operating button 20 projecting through the wall of the tank and within convenient reach of the user. This valve is provided to allow air from the chamber 13 to escape to the atmosphere.
Depending from the bottom of the chamber 13 and terminating at a short distance from the bottom of the tank 10 is a pipe 21, the upper end of this pipe extending up through the chamber 13, and terminating above the upper wall of the said chamber in a threaded nipple 22 on which is adapted to be screwed a suitable nozzle 23.
In the operation of the device, the user then operates the pump to fill the chamber 13 with air. The tank 10 is filled or partially filled with the fluid to be used. The user then sits on the upper wall of the chamber 13 so that a nozzle 23 is inserted in the rectal or vaginal cavity. The air from the chamber 13 escapes into the tank of water through the opening 17 and forces the water up through the pipe 21 and into the rectal or vaginal cavity. Pressure on the button 20 opens the valve 18 and allows the escape of air from the chamber 13 to the atmosphere. The opening of the valve reduces the pressure of air in the water tank 10 and checks the flow from the nozzle after the user has taken suflicient water.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that I have provided a simple and compact device of this character and one which can be cheaply manufactured.
What is claimed is:
A syringe comprising a vertical tubular tank containing water and having a flared base, an upwardly flared air chamber disposed on the upper end of the tank, the lower wall of the chamber having an opening communicating with the interior of the tank, the upper wall of the air chamber being depressed to form a seat, means for forcing air into the chamber, a vertical water discharge pipe disposed in the tank, and extending upwardly through the depressed wall of the air chamber and provided with a nozzle, a spring pressed valve disposed in the wall of the air chamber, and an operating stem on the valve projecting through the chamber for manual manipulation to eX- haust air from the chamber to the atmosphere, and check the outflow of water.
