PATENT UFFICE.
COMBINED AIR-COMPRESSOR AND STORAGE-TANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,556, dated March 22, 19014.
Application filed November 14, 1903. Serial No. 181,156. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, IsAAo N. WILFONG, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Air- Compressor and Storage-Tank, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined air-compressor and storage-tank.
It consists in putting the compressing-pump within the tank, whereby a compact and portable device is secured and danger of injury to the compressor is obviated.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawing, which represents, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, a device embodying my invention, 1 designates a cylindric tank, mounted on feet 2. Within the tank is secured a pump 3, the rod 4 of which passes out of the top of the tank and terminates in a handle 5. At the foot of the pump 4 and. partly exterior of the tank 1 is a fitting-6, forming a connection between the bottom of the pump and the tank. In the passage in this fitting is a needle-valve 7, by which this connection may be manually closed. In the fitting 6 is also a chamber 8, in which is seated a check-valve 9. From the chamber 8, beyond the valve 9, a port 8 opens into the tank 1. At the upper end of the tank is a valve 10, from which a pipe 11 leads to an atomizer or spraying device in which the compressed air may be used. A pressure-gage 12, attached to the tank 1, shows the air-pressure therein.
The operation is as follows: The needle- Valve 7 being opened, the pump 3 may be operated to produce any desired pressure in the tank 1. The check-valve 9 operates in the usual way to prevent any return flow of the air to the pump. When the desired pressure is reached, the valve 7 may be closed to more effectually check any leakage from the tank through the pump. When it is desired to use the stored force, the valve 10 may be opened,
which permits the compressed air to flow through the pipe 11.
My device is intended chiefly for small portable tanks. By placing the pump within the tank a convenient and portable device is produced. In addition to this the wall of the pump is protected from accidental injury by which the pump would be rendered useless.
By making the fitting 6 of solid metal in the form shown I secure a very light and durable connection between the tank and the pump and one which is easily and firmly secured to both parts.
It is evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, a storage-tank, a compression-pump within said tank, a solid metal fitting forming the connection between the lower ends of said tank and said pump and having a passage therein leading from said pump to said tank and a check-valve in said passage.
2. In combination, a storage-tank, a compression-pump within said tank, a fitting forming the connection between the lower ends of said tank and said pump, a check-valve in said fitting, said fitting having a port opening into said tank beyond said valve and a manuallyoperated valve in said fitting between said pump and said check-valve and having a handle exterior of said 'tank.
3. In combination, a storage-tank, a compression-pump Within said tank, a fitting forming the end of said pump and its connection with said tank and having a passage connecting said pump with said tank, a check-valve and a manually-operated valve in said passage.
