ASSORTMENT-IBOX F012. LEAD-PENGILS AND SIMILAR ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. i3, T915.
Application filed January 15, 1914. Serial No. 812,245.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Gnonen WOLF, a resident of West New York, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Assortment-Boxes for Lead-Pencils and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes for containing in convenient and portable shape assortments of lead pencils and other articles of stationery; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figures 1, 2 and 3 represent the three blanks of card board, or the like, from which the parts of the box are produced; Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 4-4 Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view of the complete box with the flaps which cover the top of the box thrown open; Fig. 6 is a cross section of the box in closed condition.
The body of the box is formed from the blank Fig. 1. The portion 1 of this blank forms the bottom of the box; the end strips 2 and side strips 3, adapted to be bent along the score lines 00, form the ends and sides of the box. The finished. box body is shown at A, Fig. 5.
Within the box A, and at one end there of, is placed a smaller box made from the blank shown in Fig. 2 (A being the bottom portion, and 5, 6, the end and side strips re spectively, adapted to be bent along the score lines 1 to form the ends and sides of this smaller box). The smaller box, placed inthe large box A at one end thereof, and secured in. place therein, forms, as shown in Fig. 5, a small compartment B at one end of the box A to receive small articles such as, for example, as steel pens, a rubber eraser. and the like. The sides and outer end of this smaller compartment are thus reinforced by the sides and outer end of this smaller box, which fit snugly against the sides and end of the box A, and are covered bv the same finishing paper as the latter. The length of the longer compartment in the box A is suflicient to accommodate lead pencils. penholders, etc.
The blank shown in Fig. 3 forms the envelop for the box A. It is of the same length as the box, and of such width that, when folded around the box, its side portions overlap and form a top or cover for the box. It is made of leatheret or some other suitable material having reinforced and stiffened side sections 7, 8, corresponding substantially in width to that of the box A, separated from a corresponding stiffened and reinforced central section 9 of like width, by intermediate narrower unreinforced and pliable sections 10 of a width corresponding to the height of the sides of the box A.
The box A is placed on and secured to the central section 9 by gluing its bottom thereto, or by other suitable means. the box is to be closed, the parts 10, 7, 8, are folded around the body of the box, the sections 10 lying close against the sides of the box while the flaps 7 8, overlap and cover the top of the box. To hold the parts secure in this position, the flap 7 is formed of two plies separate from one another except along their ends and inner longer edges, thus forming, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, a flat pocket into which the opposite flap 8 may be tucked as a tongue and securely held. The outer corners of the tongue flap are rounded to permit its ready insertion into the pocket flap. A bit of tape or other suitable material 11 is afiixed to the tongue flap 8 in position to be grasped by the fingers when it is desired to withdraw the tongue flap from the pocket flap.
Having described my improvement, what I claim herein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An assortment box for lead pencils and the like consisting of a box proper, and an envelop or inclosing cover composed of a stiff reinforced central section to which the box is applied and secured bv its bottom,
intermediate pliable sections of width equal to the height of the side walls of the box, and adapted to fit snugly against said side .walls when the cover is wrapped around the W hen ing of tWo plies separate from one another In testimony whereof I affix my signature except at their ends and inner longer edges in presence of tWo Witnesses.
to form a flat pocket extending the length GEORGE \VOLF. of said flap to receive andv house the other Witnesses:
5 flap, substantially as and for the purposes HERMAN DITTRICH,
hereinbefore set forth. EDWARD W. BENLYI-IEIMEY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 'five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
