Description

amistad @anni (titan .NATHAN THOMPSON, or
BROOKLYN, New YORK.
Letters Patent No. 113.467, dated April 4, 1871.
I IMPROVEMENT IVN FASTENINGS FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHESL,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the samerl l To all to whom'it may concern:
-as applied to the 'meeting rails of an upper and lower window-sash; and Y Figure 2, a sectional view of the same takenas indiated by the line d: :z: in iig. 1. 4
'Similar' letters of reference indicate 'corresponding parts in both figures. v
My invention -consists iu a combined screw-andvbutton fastening, mainly designed for the` meetingrailsof window-sashes, in which a button pivoted to -a plate von the'one Vsash is formed at or neara swinging extremity of it, with a screw-nut or projection through which'a thumb-screw isfitted, for the pur' pose ot' locking the buttonwhen turned to fasten the sashes, rsaid screw then being made to enter, in a ceu-y tering xnanner, a recess in a plate secured to the ops posite sash, and whereby -the sashes areheld from rattle o'r shake and securely locked against being opened by the'introdnction of a knife or like instrumeut between the meeting-rails from the outside.
'lhis button rnovesat .right angles to the plaire of motion of lthe sash, l v
1n the accompanying drawing- Arepresents'the button, pivoted, as at 11, to a plate, c, which is secured to the meeting rail ot' an upper sash, B.'
This button is provided, at or near its fastening end, with a screw-nut or box, (l, which may be formed by an upward projection, andI through which a fingerscrew, U, arrangedto swing with the b utton,'is,"itt`ed, said screw preferably beingconstructed so thatit cannot be detached fromjthe button.
,The screw C is of tapering forni at itsV lower end,
so'that when' the button A is turned to fasten the sashes and the screw Gtnrned'to screw its way down througnthenut portion Z ofthe button the tapering lower end of the screw is made to enter a correspondingly-shaped'` recess, l@in a plate, f, secured to the lower sash D or meeting-rail thereof, whereby the sashes are vnot only locked, but centered, as it were, vand held from rattle or shake in various directions.
Au equivalent construction would be to make the lower end of the screw `the. female center, and a conical or ltapering projection on the plate the male' center. Y r t To open the sash or sashes it'is only necessary to unscrew the screw O from lock with the plate f and then to suitably turn the.-button, using the screw C as a handle. Y
-The button A has its range of action restricted by a stop, g, arranged so that whenthe button is turned to fasten the sashes its screw G is necessarily brought iu line with or over the recess e in the plate f, and so that, when said button is turned to untasten 4the sashesfit is automatically stopped in a position which will not interfere with the working of the sashes the one past the other. a h l 'A sash-fastener thus constructed is at once neat, cheap, durable, and secure. h
Under a changed condition of the meeting-rails'or parts to which the fastener is applied,- vthen the relative position of the latter,or its several parts, will be changed accordingly, andthe same' be arranged to. have either a right or left-hand actionwhen closing.
plane in which the sash is moved, and tapering recess e in theadjacent plate or surface j, substantially as specified. y
