Description

G. H & D. W. HAZELTON.
Coal Scuttle.
Patented Apr. 4, 1871.
NFETERS, FHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D c.
meta Swan that GEORGE H. HAZELTON AND DWIGHT W. HAZELTON, OF PHILADE PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 113,429, dated April 4, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-.SCUTTLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE H. HAZELTON' and DWIGHT W. HAzEL'roN, both of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Improvement inGoal- Hods; and we hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing which forms a partof the specification.
Figures 1 and 2 show vertical cross-sections.
Figures 3 and 4 are enlarged views of the parts when the body, foot, and bottom are joined.
This invention consists in an arrangement of parts 'so that they maybe readily manulhctured and put totogether the result is a durable and cheap vessel, well proportioned as to durability in all its parts.
A inthe drawing is the foot, of tho-ordinary form, and having the head or shoulder a, as in figs. 3 and 4, and the flange I).
B is the bottom, and is a plain flat piece of wrought or cast-iron, zinc, or other metal, or wood, cut or shaped to the form of the top of the foot. y
The body .0 has ahead, 0, as shown in fig. 4, or shoulder c, as shown in fig. 3, and the part below the bead or shoulder is flared out so as to fit over the foot when the parts are brought together.
By this construction the bottom, when the several parts are brought together, as shown in figs. 3 and 4,
is securely-clamped between the foot and the body, and the bend or shoulder c on the body and the bottorn; and the lower edge of the body and head or shoulder won the foot, together with the rivets or other fastenings, form a close joint and a support for the body. i I
. The bottoin'may be made, by this construction, of any material desired. In fig 1 it is shown of sheet metal; in fig. 2, of wood. It maybeof cast-metal or of any material desired which is sufliciently durable.
The foot and body should, by preference, be riveted together; but in addition solder or cement may be used and the joint may 'be secured by galvanizing, i. 0.. coating the parts with zinc in the warmer well known for galvanizing iron.
The head a, may be omitted, though we prefer to use it, as" it conduces to the strength and elegance of the hod.
- Having thus described our invention,
\Vhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,-
The improved ooal-hodherein described, consisting of the body G having the head or shoulder c, the flat bottom B, and the foot A having the flange b, all the parts being arranged and united as set forth.
GEORGE II. HAZELTON. :DWI GH'J. \V. HAZELTON.
