CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 34 1915.
Application filed January 31, 1914. Serial No. 815,778.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED Srincun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to corsets, and particularly to means therefor whereby the garment may be readily taken up or let out as the occasion may necessitate.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means which may be connected with the garment in a manner which will permit of a uniform adjustment such as the taking up or letting out of the garment throughout the length of the garment.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a corset, showing he application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the adjustable connecting members; Fig. i is a similar view looking at the opposite side thereof; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
The device herein constructed is intended primarily for use upon corsets or similar apparel and in view of its object it is preferred to construct a corset which is open throughout along one side, and in the illustration A and B form the companion relatively separable portions of the side of the garment, which are adapted to be effected through operation of the invention. The portion or element A is provided with a member A. which has a longitudinal series of small buttons 1.
The essential element of the invention resides in the provision of a metallic casing 2 arranged in the fold of the fabric forming the portion B of the garment, and as illustrated said casing is provided with a plurality of horizontal lateral extensions 3. These extensions are secured between separate fab rics of the garment by a line of stitching which may be extended in a substantially sinuous manner, as at 4: and arranged with such regard to the casing 2, so as to securely hold the latter in its applied position upon the garment.
In the extensions 3 of the casing or collar and slidable therein are adjustable connecting devices 5. It is preferred that these devices be made of flat springy metal of a suit able width and of appropriate length so that any required separation of the parts A and B of the garment may be satisfactorily effected. These members are each provided with a longitudinal series of substantially U-passages 6, and at the outer ends the members are provided with hooks 7 having relatively long flaps 8, which open at their inner ends in substantially circular passages 9. The said passages 9 are proportioned with such regard to the buttons 1 on the portion A of the garment that they may readily receive the same and in such manner that the buttons may be moved into the slots 8 of the hook to be thereby held against derangement from said members.
Under ordinary conditions it is necessary that the connecting members 5 are immovably held in the extensions 3 of the casing 2. In other words, it is essential that they be held against movement when connected with the buttons 1 of the portion A after the garment is fitted to the person.
In order that such means may be employed for performing the above-mentioned function and at the same time the means may be relied. upon to efiect an instantaneous release of said members 5 to permit them to slide freely to extended positions when it is required to let out the garment or to increase the size thereof, I find it advantageous to employ a form of securing member in the form of a strip of metal 10 which is slidable longitudinally in the casing 2 and provided with a plurality of springs 11, one for each of the members 5 and constructed so as to freely engage in any one of the passages 6 of such member when the strip is adjusted to one position. The said strip is provided with a button 1.2, the shank 13 of which being slidable in a slot 14: formed in one wall of the casing 2. Then the button is moved in one direction the springs of the strip will be released from the passages 6 in the members 5 and the latter are then free to move longitudinally to extended positions from the casing extensions 8.
The members 5 are provided with stops 15 that are adapted to abut against'the per tion 16 of the casing 2 When the members 5 are moved to their extreme extended positions' In this manner the members Will be held against becoming accidentally deranged from the casing.
I claim 1. A fastening device of the class described comprising a pair of members for attachment to a garment, one of said members having a button and the other having a guide arranged at an angle to said member, a connecting member adapted to be de tachably engaged With the button of the first-named member and adjustably secured in the guide of the second member, and a securing member for said connecting member, said securing member being slidably engaged with the second member.
2. A fastening device of the class described comprising a member for attachment to a garment and having a plurality of guides arranged at an angle thereto, a plurality of connecting members extending across the first named member and each adjustably arranged in one of the guides thereof, and a common securing member for said connecting members, said securing member being slidably engaged With the first named member.
3. A fastening device of the, class described comprising a member for attachment to agarment and having a plurality of guides arranged at an angle thereto, a plurality of connecting members extending across the first named member and each ad justably arranged in one of the guides there- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
