IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SHADE FIXTURES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makng'part of the same.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known thatI, NATHAN THOMPSON, of Brooklyn, in' the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Window-Shade Fixture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full1 clear, and, exact description-thereof, reference being had t the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication'. v i

The invention consists in a screw-clamp of novel construction, which is to he securedto the windowcasing in a convenient position for the passage of the shade-cord through it, and by whichl sufficient friction isproduced and tension maintained upon the cord passing through-it to hold the shade in any position, but not to prevent it from being drawn up or down by a dir'fe'ctvpull upon the cord.'

usual pulley P, over which the operatingcord B passes in the usual manner. "This cord, which hangs downfrom the front and back of said pulley, may have its I ends secured together, or left free, as desired.`

C is a metal boxV provided with lugs a a, which are secured by screws e e to the'window-casing, and having in its top and bottom two holes for the passage of the cordB, and in the center of its front another qole for the reception of the shank of a screw, S.

D is a follower, `which is of a' 'shape and` size to tit within the box Ggaud constitutes the back thereof'. Said follower has formed on its inner side aboss, f, in which there is atapped hole toV receive the screw S.

The screwS is provided with a bead, h, on its outer end, by which it is operated, and its inner end is riveted beyond the follower so as to prevent it from be- I ingentirelywithdrawn from it, but not so as to interfere withits operation therein.

Between, the` follower D and the front or the box are two blocksb b, of hard wood or other hard material, in the faces or opposed sides of which are longitudinal grooves of nearly semcircular form in theirv transverse section, said grooves being opposite the pressed toward each other, by means of the 'screw S, as to adjust the friction upon the cord to make it support the shade in any position.

The shade is raised Eand lowered by pulling on the front or back portion of the cord which hangs below theY h'xture; and in this operation the tension on the cord is preserved, provided a proper degree of Vcompression is produced by the clamping-screw to make the clamps give the necessary friction to the cord.

In case, from any accidental cause, the cord should become slack between the roller aud the fixture, a pulf on either portion of the cordbelow the ixturerwill, il the friction of the clamp besucient, give proper tension to' the cord, and thereby make it produce the necessary friction ou the pulley to hold the roller.

Instead of the screw S screwing into the follower, it I might be secured thereto, and operate within a. nut on the exterior of the front of the box.

What l claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is--` The combination of the box C, grooved blocks b b, follower' D, and screw S, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
