SIDE LIGHT FOR BOATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mai. 30, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRWIN CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Lights for Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
The present invention relates to lights for boats, and more particularly to lights which can be attached to the sides of a boat to serve as signal lights.
It is an'object of the present invention to provide a casing or body in which an incandescent electric lamp maybe mounted, this body being polished on the inside to serve as a reflector, and being open at its front to receive a lens.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a removable closure or cover for the body, this cover serving to hold the lens snugly in position to make the structure substantially water tight but being readily removable to give access to the incandescent lamp when desired.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be made clear by the following detailed description which is to be taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp, Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof on the line 22 Fig. 3, Fig. 3 a sectional plan on the line 3-3 Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view with a portion of the cover broken away to expose the lens, and a portion of the lens broken away to expose the flange on the bottom closure.
In the construction illustrated, the casing or body has a flat side 1, adapted for attachment by bolts 2 to the side wall 8 of a boat or other suitable support. The back portion of side wall 1 may be cut away at 4 to form a pair of vertical ribs 5 and 6, holding the device spaced away from the supporting wall 3. Integral with the side Wall 1 is a back wall 7 which is provided near its front with a shoulder 8 terminating in a vertical hp 9. -A rubber gasket 10 may cover shoulder 8 to receive the edge of a lens 11. The forward part of side wall 1 is provided with a flat abutment 12 faced with a gasket 13, and bordered by a lip 141.
The bottom closure 15 may carry an incandescent electric lamp 16 and is fastened in place by a plurality of screws not shown, which take into the lower edges of the side and rear walls 1 and 7. The bottom 15 carries a flange 17 which is positioned to overlap the lower edge of the glass lens 11 and to hold the lens snugly against the gaskets 10 and 13. The top 18 for the casing is held in place like the bottom by screws 19 and carries a downwardly extending flange 120 adapted to overlap the top edge of the ens.
l/Vhen putting the lens in place, it is slipped down from above behind lips 9 and 14 until it seats on bottom 15 behind flange 17. Then top 18 is dropped down until its flange 20 bears against the outer face of the lens at the top, and thereafter top 18 and bottom 15 are crowded over until the lens is firmly seated on the gaskets l0 and 13, and are then fastened by suitable screws 19, making the structure as a whole, substantially water tight and free from any liability of rattling.
The body or casing is preferably made from a single piece of brass, and may be burnished along its inner faces to serve as a reflector for the light from lamp 16. The body casting may be the same in shape, whether it is to be used on the port side or the starboard side of the boat, and the structure as a whole, is compact and easy to manufacture.
Various changes in detail may be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A boat light consisting of a body portion closed on two sides and open at the front, a removable top and bottom for said body portion, a curved lens for said open front held in place by said top and bottom and an incandescent lamp mounted on said bottom and removable therewith.
2. A boat light consisting of a body portion open at the front to permit the passage of light, and closed at the side and rear to form a reflector said body having abutments on its front, a curved lens for said light opening, and a removable cover for said body portion holding said lens in place against said abutments to form a substantially water-tight structure.
3. A boat light having a body portion, fiat along two sides and open at the front, a lens fitted to said open front, a bottom for said body portion having a flange overlapping the lower edge of said lens, and a removable cover for said body portion having a flange overlapping said lens at its top and removably holding the lens against said body portion.

A side light for boats .comprising a body portion fiat along its :side and rear, and with an opening at its front bordered by projecting lips, a lens seated behind said lips, gaskets between said lens and said body portion, a bottom for said'body portion having a flange engaging the outer face of said lens near its lower edge, and a removable cover for said body' portion hav ing a flange'gripping said lens and holding it seated against said gaskets. 7
