LAMP STRUCTURE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST S. IIU'rroN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Calgary, in the Province of Alberta 0 and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Structures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp structures and has particular application to a combination lamp and audible signal for use on motor vehicles.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a lamp structure for motor vehicles wherein the lamp may be swung to any desired position so that the rays of light may be projected onto any part of the vehicle and wherein the lamp will be securely held in adjusted position so as to prevent accidental movement thereof.
It is also my purpose to provide a combination lamp and audible signal which will be embodied in a unitary structure so that the single structure may perform the double function of an illuminator and an audible signal.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a structure of the class described which will embody comparatively few parts and these so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum and enable the structure to be readily and quickly taken down so that the parts may be cleaned and repaired. With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.

eferring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a spherical shell formed with 55, an opening 2 and suitably secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

inner side of the shell 1 at a point diametrically opposite the opening 2 is a support 3. Passed through the opening 2 is a frustoconical shell 4 having the small end disposed in juxtaposition to the support 3 and the large end projecting beyond the shell 1. Threaded through the support 3 and into the small end of the shell 4 is a securing screw 5. In the present instance, the inner surface of the shell 4 is equipped with inwardly projecting ribs 6 suitably spaced apart around the shell and having the inner ends thereof terminating short of the small end of the shell 4 and the outer ends terminating flush with the outer end of the shell. 7 designates a reflector mounted in the outer end portion of the shell 4 and frusto-conical in shape. The outer wall of this reflector engages the ribs 6 so that the reflector will be held against movement beyond the inner ends of the ribs. 8 designates an annulus hinged to the outer edge of the cone-shaped shell 4 and capable of swinging movement and mounted in the annulus 8 is a bulls eye 9, while formed inthe annulus are segmental slots 10 that register with the spaces between the ribs6. Secured to the inner end of the reflector 7 is a lamp receptacle 11 and mounted in the receptacle 11 is an electric lamp bulb 12.
13 designates a support for the lamp. In the present instance, this support embodies a vertical shank 14 that is secured to the body of the vehicle in any suitable manner and formed on the upper end of the shank 14 is a concaved block 15. Secured to the outer surface of the block 15 and projecting upwardly therefrom is a curved resilient arm 16 and fastened to the upper end of the arm 16 is a block 17 having the inner surface concaved. The concaved inner surface of the block 17 confronts the similar surface of the block 15 and these concavities conform to the curvature of the spherical shell 1 and when the shell 1 is mounted in the blocks 15 and 17 the resilient arm 16 holds the shell 1 in proper position under pressure and at the same time acts to hold the shell 1 in any adjusted position.
In accordance with my present invention, I mount in the inner end of theshell 4 an audible signal 18 of any suitable construction and when the signal 18 is sounded the sound waves pass through the spaces be tween the ribs 3 and through the slots 10' in the annulus.
When the shell 1 of the lamp structure is mounted between the blocks 15 and 17 the latter frictionally engage the shell under the action of the spring 16 and permit the shell to be universally moved between the blocks so that the light rays may be projected in any desired direction. After the shell has been turned in the concaved faces of the blocks 15 and 17, the friction set up between such faces and the shell 1, incident to the action of the spring 16, holds the lamp structure in adjusted jposition and prevents accidental movement of such structure.
The audible signal 18 is preferably of the electrically operated type and, together with the lamp 12, is connected with a suitable source of supply.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within. the scope of with a spherical shell having an opening therein, of a frusto-conical shell projecting into said opening and having its side surface engaging the edges of said opening, means securing the inner end of said frustoconical shell to said spherical shell and holding the side surface of said frustoconical shell in a tight engagement with the edges of said opening, and a bracket having oppositely disposed concave surfaces engaging the surface of said spherical shell.

In a lamp structure, the combination with a spherical shell having an opening therein, of a frusto-conical shell projecting into'said opening and having its side surface engaging the edges of the opening, a surface formed on the inside of the said spherical shell adapted to abut the inner -end of said frusto-conical shell when the side surface thereof is in tight engagement with the edges of said opening, a headed screw engaging a hole in said spherical shell and screw threaded into the end of said frusto-conical shell, and a bracket having oppositely disposed concave surfaces engaging the surface of said spherical shell.
4. In a lamp structure, the combination with a spherical shell having an opening therein, of a frusto-conical shellpro ecting into said opening and secured to said spherical shell, a bracket having oppositely disposed concave surfaces engaging the surface of said spherical shell and having a resilient connection between said concave surfaces of said bracket.
