FRANCIS J. MGDERMOTT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG'NOR TO BIRDSEY,
SOMERS COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CQNNECTICUT, A. CORPORATION OF CON- NEGTICUT.
Application filed October 10, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. MoDnn- MOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a relatively inexpensive and extremely durable corset which shall have a maximum of strength where the strain is greatest, that is at the waist-line in front, and under the bust, which will provide adequate support to the bones and will not tear out. This I accomplish by the special construction hereinafter described, an essential feature of which is an approximately triangular corded section in each half-corset, which extends from the top of the corset downward below the waist-line, backward under the bust section and to the side seam of the halfcorset.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing my novel corset on the figure of a wearer; Fig. 2 an enlarged detail view of the inner side of the upper portion of the front of a half-corset embodying my novel invention, and Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the construction of the corded sections.
10 denotes half-corsets embodying my novel invention, 11 one of the side seams, 9 the corded sections, 12 the bust sections, 13 the abdominal sections, 14 elastic sections inserted at the lower front ends of the abdominal sections, 15 bones inserted in pockets 16 upon the inner side of the front of each half-corset and extending from the top of the corset across the bust section and the corded section and downward in the abdominal section as far as may be required, and 17 the clasp members. The bust sections are single ply and are preferably quilted, z'. e. provided with lines of stitching indicated by 18. These sections extend from the side seams to within a short distance of the front of the corresponding corded sections, the line of the lower edges of the bust sections curving from the point of attachment to the corded sections at the top, downward and Specification of Letters Patent.

backward to the side seams. The front ends of the corded sections are attached to the clasp members. The upper and lower sides of said sections are converging concave curves, the rear ends being relatively narrow and being connected by the side seams to the back sections, indicated by 19. A bone 15 inclosed in a pocket 20 is preferably placed over each side seam on the inner side. The structure of the corded sections is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. They consist simply of two plies of cloth indicated by 21 having vertically placed cords 22 stitched between them.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim:
1. A corset having clasp members and side seams, each halfcorset comprising a back section, an abdominal section, a bust section and a corded section attached to the clasp members and extending from the top of the corset downward below the waistline, the upper and lower sides of said section being converging concave curves and the rear end being relatively narrow and connected by the side seam to the back section.
2. A corset having clasp members and side seams, each half-corset comprising a back section, an abdominal section, a single ply quilted bust section and a two-ply corded section attached to the clasp member and extending from the top of the corset downward below the waist-line, the upper and lower sides of said section being converging concave curves and the rear end being relatively narrow and connected by the side seam to the back section.
3. A corset having clasp members and side seams, each halfcorset comprising a back section, an abdominal section having an elastic section inserted at the lower front end thereof, a bust section and a corded section attached to the clasp member and extending from the top of the corset downward below the waist-line, the upper and lower sides of said section being converging concave curves and the rear end being relatively narrow and connected by the side seams to the back section.
4. A corset having clasp members and side seams, each half-corset comprising a In testimony whereof I aflix my signature back section, an abdominal section, a bust in presence of two Witnesses. section and an a roximatel trian ular corded section atta ci ied to the clasp iiiem- FRANCIS J"MGDERMOTT' 5 ber and extending backward to the side Vitnesses:
