This invention relates to improvements in advertising signs, and more particularly to that class of signs designed to represent a life-like human figure.

An object of the present invention is to provide a sign of this description which may be easily and readily folded to form a compact article for shipment, and having such a flexible connection as will not destroy the'realistic appearance of the sign when displayed.

A further object of the invention is to provide an advertising sign which will be most artistic and pleasing to the aesthetic sense, and one upon which advertisingmatter may be displayed without in the least detracting from such artistic qualities.

A still further objectof my invention is to provide a former for such signs, to which silk, cloth or other material, or ornamentation may be secured in a shirred or otherwise attractive manner, so as to give to the figure the appearance of having real wearing apparel, thereby adding to its life-like effect, the former at the same time enabling the main portion of the figure to be adapted to various styles.

WVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and more particularly pointed out in the claims. Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the figure embodying one form of the invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a slightly enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is shown having the device folded upon itself when it is to be packed for shipment; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a similar figure as that shown in Fig. 1, but illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention; Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 7 is a vertical detail section, on a slightly enlarged plan taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a similar section to that of Fig. 7, but showing the sections of the figure in a position when being folded upon themselves; Fig. 9 is an enlarged horizontal. section taken on the line 99 of Fig. 6; Fig. 10 1s a front elevation of a different.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings in which I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention, in the form of a small girl, 1 represents the upper section, and 2 the lower section, constructed from cardboard or the like. The figure is preferably represented as carrying apackage 3, upon which advertising matter is displayed. A flexible member 4 of silk, cloth or other material is connected to the lower'end of the upper section 1 by a strip 5, and extends around a former 6, the rear sideof which is secured to the upper end ofthe lower sec tion 2. A sash 7 depends from the former 6 by way of ornamentation. The material is preferably shirred around the former, re-

sulting in a very realistic effect, which can be readily changed to conform to the varying styles. A stiffening member 8 is applied to the upper end of the section 2 and ex tends slightly above the same to hold in shape the cloth forming the flexible connectiongbetween thetwo sections. An eyelet 2 is provided at the top of the upper section for suspending the sign from a suitable su port.

n Figs. 5 to 9 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of construction. Referring to these figures, 1 and 2 represent the upper. and lower sections respectively, adapted to be connected together, through a flexible connection 9 of silk, cloth or the like, securedto a former 10 to form a girdle. The upper end of the girdle is secured to the upper section 1 by means of the strip 6. The upper end of the lower section 2 is bifurcated, forming a central projection 11 adapted to rest upon-the front face of the girdle, and end projections 12, which are secured to the rear face of the former 9. Theprojection 11 may be shaped and decorated to represent a rosette, bouquet, or other suitable ornamentation.

A still further slightly modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11 of the drawings. As in the other =1 gr. garage forms, upper and lower sections 1 and 2 are provided, hinged together by means of a flexible connection 13 of silk, cloth or the like. The upper end of the connection 13 encircles the lower end of the section 1 and is secured thereto by means of the strips 16. The lower end of the connection may be se cured to the lower section 2 in any suitable manner. The lower section 2 is slit to form a portion under which a girdle 14: encircling the same passes. The colors of the connection 13 and the girdle 1% are preferably different, so as to give a contrasting color effect, and the portion 15 may be jeweled or otherwise decorated. A stiffening member 16 is secured to the rear face of the lower section 2 for rigidly securing the cloth members 13 and let thereto, and the upper end of the section 2 is shaped to provide a former, which however is not removable as p in the other forms of the invention. 1 have illustrated for this form a Persian lady, but it is obvious that the same would be well adapted to other styles ofdress now in vogue.

From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that the sections of the figures may be folded inwardly upon each other to form a compact package for shipment. l/Vhen opened the flexible connection will not have lost its shape, or be in a wrinkled condition, and the sign will have the attractive, lifelike appearance intended.

I have illustrated and described preferred and. satisfactory embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, except as may be re quired by the claims.

I claim:

1. An advertising device comprising two sections, a former adjacent the abutting edges of said sections, and flexible material connecting the sections and inclosing the former.

2 An advertising device comprising two sections, flexible material connecting the sections and extending over a portion of one of the sections, and a former on said lastnamed section, said flexible material extending over the former and being shirred.

3. An advertising device comprising a figure comprising an upper and lower sec tion having abutting ends, a flexible material secured to the lower part of the upper section at the rear thereof, and extending forwardly to the upper part of the lower section at the front thereof and secured thereto, and extending downwardly a distance to form a girdle, and a former underneath the flexible material on the lower section.

4. An advertising device comprising a figure comprising an upper and lower section having abutting ends, a flexible material secured to the lower part of the upper section at the rear thereof, and extending forwardly to the upper part of the lower section and secured thereto andextending downwardly a distance to form a girdle, a fastening member secured to the rear of the upper section, a fastening member secured to the rear of the lower section, and a former underneath the, flexible material, said fastening members securing the flexible material to the sections.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a figureconsisting of two sections flexibly connested together, said sections being formed of stiffening material, the connections between the sections being formed of flexible material, and a former arranged within the flexible material.

6. An advertising device comprising a life-like figure, consisting of two sections, a piece of flexible material hingedly connecting the two sections together and extending forwardly of the sections for forming a girdle, and a former within the girdle.

7. In an advertising novelty comprising two pieces of cardboard hingedly connected together having the appearance of a human figure, a flexible connection between the sections of the figure comprising a piece of cloth secured at oneend to the upper section of a figure and secured at its opposite end to the lower section of the figure, a former arranged within the flexible material, and a stiffening member secured to the lower figure for bracing the cloth when the sections of the figure are in' open position.
