Description
UNITED STATES 'PATENT OEEIGE.
PETER E. CLARK, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 13,259, dated April 4, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER E. CLARK, of Hartford, county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots, Shoes, Gaiters, 85e.; and to enableothers skilled :in the art to make'and use the same l will proceed to describe, referring to drawing, in whichthe same letters indicate like parts in each of the gures.
The nature of this invention consists in securing a strengthening` material, as a band or cord, around the button-holes, in the act of sewing or stitching the same by a sewing-machine. It further consists in strengthening the seam of the heel or leg of the boot or gaiter by securing a band or cord on one or both sides of said seam while in the act of sewing the same by a machine. The object of this invention is to strengthen or support the parts most liable to break away, as when fancy leather is used, it, being light or frail, is very likely to break away at the weak points, as the back seam or the button-holes. To obviate this difficulty is the object of this invention.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis 5 a side view of the gaiter-leg, with the iiap thrown open so as to show the strengthening or support secured around the button-hole. Figs. 2 and 3 show a portion of the back or front seam of the heel or leg of a boot or gaiter having a cord or band on both, or one side thereof, secured thereto by machine-sewing.
a is the upper leather, or other material, of a boot, shoe, or gaiter. b are the buttons. c are the buttonholes. d is the strengthening or supporting band or cord, secured around facing, and produce an equally elegant article.' f is the back or front seam, strengthened by a cord or band, g, secured onone or both sides thereof, as desirable, all performed by the operation of the machine insewing up the seam. This improvement is effected by means of a cord-guide affixed to the machine below the work being sewed, or both below and above the work being sewed, so as to produce, at the same time with the sewing, a strengthening support upon one or both sides of the material of which the boot, shoe, or gaiter is made. Thus the ordinary liability of breaking out the button-holes is prevented, and the liability of breaking out the leather at or a little above the heel is obviated, thereby adding greatly to the value of the goods with but very small extra cost.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. A new improved manufacture of boots, shoes, or gaiters, having a strengthening cord or support, d, stitched to the same around the button-holes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The back or front seam f, supported by one or more cords or bands, g, substantially as and for the purpose described.
PETER E. CLARK.
