Be it known that I, JOHN BRrMRosE, a subject of the King of Great Brita n, residing at Dongan Hills, county ofRichmond,
.and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Superheaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention which constitutes the sub-' ject matter of this application relates to 1mprovements in a 'superheater especially adapted in its use to traction engines.
This invention has particularly to do with that type of superheater in which the indi- .vidual superheating elements are projected rearwardly from the smoke-box into the fire tubes of the boiler, and the invention pertains largely to the construction of the superheater headers and superheating elements and the relation of the same to the smoke box of thetraction or other engine.
In the drawings, Figured is a longitu dinal section of the forward portion of a traction engine, illustrating the manner in which the superheater is' secured to the boiler. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1-. Fig. 3 is a top plan view illustrating the header supporting brackets.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates the forward portion of a traction boiler provided with the usual fire-tubes 11, tube sheet 12, Smokestack 13, and steam dome 14k. The headers 15 are supported preferably, by means of brackets 17 located on the interior of the smoke stack, and by brackets 17kon the outside of the smoke box. To give proper stability to the headers, I employ suitable securing means 18 which are connected to these brackets on the outside of the smoke box, as clearly shown in Fig; 2.
One of the important features of this invention consists in making provision for removing the completesuperheater as a unit from the boiler without breaking the joints between the superheater tubes and the headers. This is accomplished by providing slots 19 on either side of the shell of the smoke. box running longitudinally thereto, and extending to the front end of the shell. It will therefore be seen that when the plates 20, which cover these slots, are removed, and the inlet and outlet steam pipes 21 and 22 disconnected, the headers and superheater elements may be removed or assembled as a unit. The saturated steam from the boiler is supplied to the header by means of the pipe 21 and the superheated steam is supplied to the engine by means of pipe 22. Both of said pipes are shown only diagrammatically, as it will be obvious to anyone skilled in this art how to make the connections between the superheater and boiler on the one hand and between .the superheater and the engine on the other.
From Fig. 2 it will be observed that the arrangement of superheater tubes is such that any one unit may be removed without necessarily disturbing any other. Each header is preferably provided with'an opening opposite each superheater tube opening to give access to the superheater tube ends,
whereby the latter may be more readily exanded into or removed from the headers.
What I claim is:
1. A boiler pnovided with fire tubes, in combination with a superheater, comprising transversely arranged inlet and outlet headers and super-heating units, the latter pro-- jecting rearwardly into said firetubes, the smoke box of said boiler provided with longitudinal slots extending to the front end of the shell for receiving the ends of the headers, and means for securing said headers in the said slots.
2. A boiler provided with fire tubes and the shell of which is provided with longitudinal slots extending to the? front-end 03f the smoke box, in combination with a superheater comprising transversely arranged inlet and outlet headers supported in said slots and superheater elements projecting rearwardly into said fire tubes, and means for removably securing said headers in said slots, whereby theentire superheater may be removed as a unit. v
3.
