SUPERHEATER-HEAER.
Speccation of Letters Ptent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that I. JonN Pmnnosn, a subject of the King of Great Britain. residing;I at New York. in the county and State of New York. have invented certain new and useful vl'mnrovements in Superheater- Headers. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention which constitutes the suhiect-matter ot' this apolication relates to an improvement in sunerheatersand has to do particularly with the tvpe of sunerheater in 'which the individual units or elements are nroiccted rearwardlyfrom the smakeloos, in which the suncrheater is located, into the fire tubes of a locomotive or other hoiler.
The invention resides more partichlarly in the form of header used. one of the more imnortant features consisting in the provision ot an enlargement at the central non tions of the saturated and sunenheated steam chamhers. so that the drV-nipe 'muv be rcmoved from the locomotive througrh said enlargement While usingr the chambers ot medium sire and without disturbing the position oi the superheater.
In the drawings. Figure l is a longitn dinal section of mv device on the line rz-h of Fig. il. illustratinglr the manner in which the sunerheater is connected to the tube sheet of the boiler. and its relation to the drv-pine and tire-tuhes of said hoiler. Fig. 2 is a front View of the sunerheater parts thereof being in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the header. with the enlargement shown in central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a section of one of the header chamhers taken on the line e-f of Fig. 3. Fig'. 5 is a View in nersnective showing! the various narts of the header before they have been assembled and Welded.
Referring to the drawing in detail` the reference numeral 10 designates the forward portion of a locomotive or stationarv boiler, nrovided with the usual lire tubes 11. smoke box 1Q. tube sheet 13. and drv pine. 14. The sunerheater comprises a-saturated steam chamber 15, the suoerheated steam chamber 16, the enlargement 17 constituting a nart of the header and to which the chambers are independently welded or otherwise secured` and the superheating element or units 33, which project rearwardly into the fire tubes 1l and the inlet and outlet ends of which are expanded respectively into the inlet and outlet chambers l5 and 1G.
The saturated and superheated steam compartments 1S and 19 are formed bv weldinev or the otherwise securing together of 'the chambers 15 and 1G to the cylindrical 60 enlargement 17. The manner in which these parts are constructed is clearly illustrated in Figs. 3, and The enlargement 17 is provided with two onenings rf, b, through the side thereof which preferably corre G5 :wond in shane and size to the shape and size of the openings o', b' in the chambers 15 and In the embodiment shown these openings are both substantially rectangular and scmieircular in shape.
The. cvlindrical enlargement is provided with continuous annular flanges 20, `21, for direct connection with the dry-pipe, and to provide a securing means for the closure 9.2. Tin, enlargement is also provided with an internal annular flange Q3, and this flange, in coniunction with the elosuro` divides the enlargement into two separate chambers Q5, QC, which constitute parts of the compartments 1S and 19, respectively. The 80 header therefore commises an enlargement provided with a partition dividing: the sume into saturated and super-heated steam chambers. in combination with saturated and superheated steam chambers Welded or otherwise .secured to said enlargement. the last mentioned saturated steam chambers in eonjunction with said saturated steam chamber ot said enlargement constituting` the saturated steam compartment of the superheater,y and the last mentioned steam chamber in coniunction with the superheated steam chamber of said enlargement constituting: the. superheated steam compartment of the sunerheater.
From the construction above described, it will be seen that I hare devised-a superheater in which the chambers are of normal size` cach 'independently welded or other- 'ise connected to the enlargement, and in 100 which provision `is made for withdrawing the dry-pipe through the latter for replacement or repairs. It is only necessary to remoiu the closures 2Q and Q4 in order to do this, which allords ready access to the said dry-pipe. Consequently I obtain not only all the advantages secured by the drum, but others in addition, as will be apparent. It is of course understood that there is quite a dill'erence in temperature between the saturated steam in the inlet chamber an the superheated steam in, the oul'l it chamber. The feature therefore of havin the chambers independently connected allows each to expand and freely accommodate itself to its own temperature. Of course rovision is made in the Way of hand-holes 2 for affording access to the ends of the superheatin units, whereby the same may be ex ande into place or removed from the hea ers, as desired.
Another feature of this invention consists in providing supports 2B for the superheating units,.which take up all strain upon the superheaters whenever, for any reason, the locomotive comes to u sudden op, or is otherwise jarred. These supnorts '28 are mounted upon suitable brackets Q9, located upon the interior 'wall of the smoke-box, and are further provided with screw-threaded bolts, welded or otherwise secured thereto, andr projecting in u longitudinal direction with respect 'to the moltebox. These bolts, or rather screw-,threaded rojections, are adapted to enfer petfinald` liigs welded or otherwise secured tethere-` turn bands of the superheater units, and it will he seen that a rigid connection is secured whenever the nuts 31 are in place. It is necessary to have the bolts proiecting from the supports 28 longitudinally arranged, for convenience in placinthe'nuts 31 thereon.
The headers may be supported either by the tube sheet or by the brackets 32, or by both. as desired.
lVhat I claim is:

In combinaltonfwith a boiler, of a suprh'eater, comprising a header located in the smoke-box, and superheater units having erfahre-ted lugs andprojecting rearwardly to o surality of lire tubes, the ends of said tl'nits ingl expanded into.said header, in combination with means for rigidly anchoring said units, comprising cross bars secured to the interior of the smoke-box and provided with V projecting bolts thereon, and means'tfor securing the said bolts to the said luga. i
6. In combination with a boiler, a superheater comprisin a transverse or extension header located in and supported by the walls of the smoke box, and superheater units havin perforated lugs and projecting rearwardly into a plurality of lire tubes, the ends of said units being expanded into said header, in combination with means for rigidly anchoring said units comprising a plura lity of crossbars secured to the interior of said smoke box and each provided with a plurality of 'bolts arranged substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said boiler, and means for securing said bolts to said lugs.
