l To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. OATLEY, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam- Boiler Superheaters, of which improvement the following is a-specification.
My present invention relates to superheaters of the so-called smoke box type,
that is to say of the general class or type 1n which the superheating appliances are located in the smoke box of a fire tubesteam boiler, and its object is to provide a superheater of such type which shall be readily apexpansion and contraction.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter ,fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l lis a vertical longitudinal central section through the forward portion of a locomotive boiler, illustrating an application of my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section through the same, with theT head also shown in section; Fig. 3, a view, partly infront elevation,
with the smoke box front removed, and partly in vertical transverse section, on the line a (L of Fig. 2; l Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section illustrating an application of my invention in a compound locomotive, Fig. 5, a horizontal section of the construction shown in Fig. 4, and; Fig 6, a vertical transverse section, on the line b b of Fig. 4.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, my invention is herein set forth as applied in a locomotive boiler, 4, which is substantially of the ordinary construction, and is provided, at its forward end, with a smoke box, 4, of the ordinary form and dimensions. of fire tubes, 4, extend from the firebox at the rear end of the boiler', which is not shown,

Steam is supplied from the boiler to the cylinders of the locomotive, through a main steam pipe or dry pipe, 61, passing through the front flue sheet, and connected, in front thereof, to aT head, 62, from which it is conducted through superheater pipes, 6), which, with their accessories, will be presently described, and, after being superheated in said pipes, passes to the cylinders through delivery steam pipes, 63,1ocated onoppositc sides of the smoke box, in the lower portion thereof.
A casing or header, 70, is located on each side of the smoke box, adjoining, as closely as practicable, the front ring, 4h, thereof, each of said headers comprising a saturated steam compartment, 7 0*?, and a super-heated steam compartment, 70f, which are of sub stantially rectangular transverse section, and are, preferably, as shown, formed integral and connected by an intermediate plate or web. The headers are curved vertically, so
as to conform, as nearly as may be, with the curvature of the smoke box wall, and to stand as closely thereto as practicable and leave the maximum open space between them which is` available under the diameter of the smoke box. They are supported on' rods, 70, connected to the bottom of the smoke box, andareconnected at the to i by a` transverse rod, 70'", passing through ugs on the fronts of the headers and provided with adjusting nuts engaging screw threads on its ends.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that the walls of the saturated and superheated steam compartments of the headers are substantially completely separated,
'and therefore ,that there will be no loss of heat by its transfer through said walls from the su erheated to the saturated steam.

Openings, 'which are closed :by removable plugs, 700, are formed in the fronts oi the eaders, said openings providing for the insertion, examination, and repair of the superheater pipes. The headers, 70, are, in?, this case, simi-- larly located to those irst described, and are of the same general form, each being divided into a saturated steam compartment, 708, and a superheated steam compartment, 70f, the walls of which are separated by intervening'spaces. present standard type, nor any substantial modification of the accessories thereof now in general use. As large an area of superlieating surface as is obtainable under these conditmns is afforded, and the joints are located asfar as possible from the front flue sheet and in position Where t-hey are readily accessible when required. The projection of the headers towards the vertical central plane of the smokeI box is, by reason of their vertically curbed form, not substantially greater than that of the present branch steam pipes, and the objection of interference with access to the boiler' tubes, which has obtained, vto a greater' or less degree, in prior constructions, is therefore correspondingly minimized.

1. 'lhc combination, with a steam boiler, of a vertical header or casing, supported in the smoke box adjacent to the front and the side thereof, and comprising separate saturated and superheated steam compartments, a plurality of loops or bends of superheater pipes, crmnected, at their opposite ends, to the saturated and the superheated steam compartments, respectively, and extending rearwardly therefrom, a steam supply connection opening into the saturated steam compartment, and a steam delivery cornicetion leading out-of the superheated steam compartment.
2. The combination, with a steam boiler, of a vertical header or casing, supported in the smoke box adjacent to the front and the side thereof, and having its outer Wall curved in general accordance with the wall of the smoke box, sald header comprismg separate saturated and superl'ieatcd steam compartments, a plurality of loops or bends of superheater pipes, connected, at their opposite ends, to the saturated and the superheated steam comj'iartments, respectively, and extending rearwardly therefrom, a steam supply connection opening into the saturated steam compartment, and a steam delivery connection leading?r out of the superheated steam compartment.

comprising separate sat-v l i i l of a vertical header or casing, supported in the smoke box adjacent to the front and the side thereof, and comprising; separate saturated and superheated steam compartments, a plurality of loops or bends of superheater pipes, connected, at their opposite ends, to the saturated and the superheated steam compartments, respectively, and extending rearwardly therefrom, a steam supply connection opening into the saturated steam compartment, a steam delivery connection leading out of the super-heated steam compartment, and a vertical partition plate extending longitudinally in the smoke box, on the inne-r side of the set of superheater pipes.
5. The combination, with a steam boiler, of a T head, branch steam supply pipes extending forwardly therefrom, a pair of vertical headers or casings, each supported in the smoke box adjacent to thereof and comprising a saturated steam compartment connected to one of the branch steam supply pipes and a separate superheatcd steam compartment, a plurality of loops or bends of superheater pipes, each connected, at its opposite ends, rated and superheated steam compartments, respectively, of one of the headers, and eX- tending rearwardly therefrom, and branch steam delivery pipes each connected to the superheated steam compartment of one of the headers.
6.- The combination,'with a steam boiler, of two vertical headers or casings, each supported in the smoke box adjacent to the front and one side thereof, and comprising separate saturated and superheated steam compartments, a plurality of loops or bends cf superheater pipes, each connected, at its opposite ends, to the saturated and the superheated steam coY partment, respectively, of one of the heauerf and extending` rearwardly therefrom, steam supply connections opening into the saturated steam compartments, steam delivery connections leading,` out of the supcrheatcd steam compartments, a deflectine' plate or diaphragm eX- tending transversely in the smoke box forward of the front flue sheet, a foraminous sheet or plate extending transversely forward of the deflccting` plate and between the superhcater pipes, and vertical partition plates extending forwardly from the deflecting plate and connected to the foraminous sheet or plate.
7.
