I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT ALLEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Lynwood, Kidmore Road,
EL Caversha'm, Oxfordshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tubular steam superheater for locomotive, marine, and other boilers, and is a division of application Serial No. 777,049, filed July 2, 1913. The object of the the ready removal of soot or other material from the interior of the superheating tubes to facilitate the transmission of heat from the combustion gases to the steam and generally to provide an eiiicient superheater of simple construction which can be conveniently fitted into the smoke boxes of locomotives and other smoke-tube boilers.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the greatest possible contact between the steam and the superheating tubes during the travel of the steam from the inlet to the outlet of the apparatus, and also to so arrange that the steam coming from the boiler shall be admitted to the superheater at that point from which the heating gases are expelled and, traveling through the apparatus, shall leave same at or near the point of admission of the hot gases from the boiler tubes, thereby securing the maximum heating effect.
According to this invention,

Similarly as shown at a Fig. 2 the tubes a of one unit extend through and beyond the back, the same distance as the extended side above mentioned; and these extended tubes being in register with the corresponding tubes in the other unit or joint with them and form a continuous .tube through both the units. The entire apparatus is, in the case of a locomotive, fixed in thesmoke box in suitable relative position to the fire tubes.
In the front unit, that is the unit farthest from the smoke tube plate, bafie are arranged in the form of thin sheet metal partitions 2' so disposed as to group the superheating tubes into a continuous path, along which the steam is compelled to pass in such a manner as to increase the contact of the steam with the heating tubes to the maximum available.
The back unit, which is nearest to the boiler tube plate is arranged with similar partitions or bafiles 2' shown on the left in Fig. 1, so disposed as to cause the steam to travel from side to side'in a path approximately at rightangles to the travel through the front unit.
The steam in this way makes a complete circuit of the superheater, being admitted at e at the forward end of the front, unit,
