Be it known'that 1, JOHN S. CHAMBERS,
1 a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York,1in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Superheater-Headers, of which the following is a specification.
, One of the objects of the present invention -'is to provide a simple andpractical superheater header. adapted to prevent burning out ofthe superheater tubes. Another object'is to provide a s'uperheater "header especially adaptable to boilers .of
the above type which will be compact in.
' construction, thereby occupyinga relatively small space in the smoke box.
A further object is to provide a superheater of the above character which will be reliable and eflicient in use and operation.
-A further object is to provide a superheater having few parts which will be cheap to manufacture and install and. permit ready renewal or replacement of parts as may be necessary.
Other objects such as the overcoming of certain objections to devices of this general character will be in part obviousand in part hereinafter pointed out.
The present invention accordingly consists in certain featuresof construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts,- the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims. t

Referring now to the drawings in detail and more particularly to Fig. 1, 10'designates a portionfof the boiler shell, ll -the steam dome, 12 the stack, 13 the forward tube sheet and 14-the tubes of the ordinary outlet openings 20 communicating with superheater pipes 21. These chambers 22 alternate with the chambers 18, as shown in Fig. 3, and allcommunicate with or form part of a second compartment or chamber 24 within the header 16. This compartment 24 in turn communicates at its central part through an opening 25 with a thirdcompartment or chamber 26 extending longitudinally within the header 16and provided at each endwith an outlet opening.

Fig. 1, is adaptedto coact. This valve is of any desired type and in, the form shown projects upwardly through the shell ofsmoke-box 10, as shown in Fig. 1. A transverse operating shaft 33 extends to one side where it is provided with a crank 34 connected with a.rod 35 leading back to the cab. It is believed to be unnecessary to go into the details of this mechanism as it forms no part of the present invention, ex-' ceptin .so far as it may broadly enter into certain combinations hereinafter set forth.

Thus if the engine is stopped or drifting with the throttle in substantially closed position, the saturated steam will enter from the dome 11 through the dry pipe 15, thence through the superheater tubes to i the second compartment 24 from which it will pass to the rear of the boiler through the pipe 40 to be either used or allowed to escape into the boiler tofurther heat the steam and water therein.
The operation of the present device is substantially as-follows: The saturated steam enters the pipe 15 from the dome 11 and passes into the elongated compartment 17 within the header 16 from which it in turn enters the alternately disposed chambers 18 communicating therewith before passing through the outlet openings 20 into the superheater tubes 21 disposed within the fire tubes. The superheated steam is returned from these tubes to the alternately disposed chambers 22, Fig. 3, which communicate with the second or central compartment 24:. The superheated steam. then passes through the throttle valve 30, if open, into the third compartment 26 and thence to the cylinders through the pipes 28.
The compartments are preferably formed with single walls separating adjacent chambers not only for the cheapness of construc: tion and installation, but for the purpose of compactly arranging them in the small space allowed for superheaters in the smoke-box.
It is to be noted that by locating the throttle between the superheater tubes and the cylinders, that superheated steam, when the throttle is closed, stands around the throttle and has a very short distance to travel to reach the cylinders when the throttle is opened which materially shortens the time elapsing between the opening of the throttle and the entry of-steam into the cylinders.
It is thus seen that the present invention provides a simple and practical superheater particularly adaptable for boilers of the locomotive type which will be highly efficient in use and operation.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made, without departing. from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In combination with a boiler of locomotive type, of a superheater header comprising a relatively wide member extending transversely of the smoke box and compris- '1ng an inlet chamber connected with the steam space vofthe boiler, an outlet chamber connected'with'the cylinders, and an intervening chamber having its walls common to said first mentioned chambers having its main walls diagonally disposed with respect to said header, said intervening chamber be ing divided into sections and having pipes leading thereto after passing through the fire tubes of the boiler from said first chamber. 1

In'combination with a boiler of locomotive type, of a superheater header comprising a sectional inlet chamber connected with the steam space of the boiler, an outlet chamber connected with the cylinders, and a sectional intervening chamber, said first and last chamber being connected one with another by superheater pipes passing through the fire tubes of the boiler, said chambers being integrally formed and of substantially the same size, the bottom wall of one chamber being the top wall of an other and being diagonally disposed within said header.
3. In combinationwith a boiler of loco motive type, of a superheater header comprising an inlet, an outlet and an intervening chamber having common dividing walls, said dividing walls being diagonally disposed with respect to the superheater to provide chambers of substantially equal capacity, the inlet and intervening chamber being divided into alternate sections, each section of one being connected with an adjacent section of the other by looped superheating pipes leading through the fire tubes of the boiler, said outlet'chamber having an inlet opening from the intervening chamber and an outlet opening for conducting the steam therefrom, a throttle valve in said opening positioned partly within and partly without theboiler, means for operating said throttle valve extending along the outside of the boiler, and a connection from the superheater to the boiler to deliver superheated steam back to the boiler whereby a circulation of steam may occur through the superheater at all times.
4. In combination with a boiler of locomotive type, of a superheater header comprising three substantially coextensive chambers including an inlet chamber to which steam is conducted from the steam space in the boiler, an outlet chamber for conducting superheated steam to the cylinders, and an intervening chamber having diagonally disposed alls common With said first mentioned chamber, a valve openlng between the intervening and outlet chamber means for said valve extending along the outside of the boiler to the cab, said first chamber and intervening chamber being di- 10 vided into alternate sections, and superheating tubes leading from one section through one of the fire tubes and then back to an adjacent section in the intervening chamber.
