Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE G. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Redbank, inthe county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of water-tube steam-generators. V 7 A In order that others may understand the invention, I will first proceed to describe a structure embodying the improved features of construction and subsequently will point out in the claims its novel characteristics.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side and Fig. 2 an end elevation of a gen erator which includes my invention.
In the respective figures like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The principal parts of the structure shown comprise the main vertical side distributingpipes 1, which communicate witha cross-pipe connected to the elevated steam and water drum 2 and also communicate with the horizontal bottom distributing-pipes 3, which form the base of the structure. This organization or design of the parts enumerated is common to the type of generator shown.
The structure which includes the present invention consists in the addition of a horizontal transverse distributing-pipe 4, which communicates with the vertical side distributers 1 near the top of the space 5 reserved for the furnace-chamber and also with a series of single pipe-loops 6, arranged longitudinally of the chamber, each leading by means of a connected series of pipes 7 to a water-drum 8, located below the steam and water drum 2 and the normal water-level.
At the rear end of the furnace-ch amber space 5 a series of vertical pipes 9, denominated risers, are connected with the rear transverse base distributing-pipe and form the end wall of the furnace-chamber. This series of risers 9 are each connected with a series of single pipe-loops 10, which also extend longitudinally of the furnace beneath the loops ,6, and the loops connect with a series of pipes 11, leading to the water-drum 8. A series of similarrisers 12 are connected with the longitudinal base distributing-pipes and form the side walls of the furnace-chamber. This series of risers 12 are also each connected with a double. series of single pipe-loops 13, arranged transversely one above the other and both above the longitudinally-arranged loops 6 and each communicating with the elevated steam and water drum 2 by means of. the series of connected pipes 14.
Theessence of the present invention consists in the use of a series of single pipe-loops between the distributers and the series. of risers and the water or water and steam drum.
The invention also embraces the use of a distributing pipe 4 across the front of vthe furnace and a communicating water-drum 8, located below the normal water-level of the generator, and, further, in the novel setting of the loops, each being rendered easy of access or removal from the front of the generator without disturbing the one adjacent.
In the close arrangement of the risers and loops it will be observed that the space occupied is reduced to a minimum, the separation of the same being equal only to the projection of the flange on the connections which contact with an adjacent one. In the use of these single loops as described each .loop receives comparatively cold water from the bottom distributors and is subjected directly to the hottest gases of combustion. The great advantage in this is that the greater contrast there is between the temperature of the inside and the outside of the tube the greater the efiiciency of the boiler, inasmuch as heat units will pass through metals in accordance with the square of the difference of the temperature between the interior and exterior of the same. The advantageous point therefore obtained by the use of a single loop between the risers and thedrums, as shown, is that a greater evaporation can be obtained from the same number of square feet of heating-surface, and at the same time a lower stack temperature is obtained, due to the absorption of the heat of the gases of combustion by the distribution of the water of low temperature through a series of single loops only instead of through a number or stack of loops communicating with each riser, as in former structures of this type.
By theuse of the water-drum below the line of water-level a large body of water is carried, which prevents rapid fluctuations of the water-level frequently experienced in water-tube generators. cured incidental to the present improvements wherein the use of fire-brick in the furnacewalls is eliminated and the accessibility to and removal of all or any of the pipes that form the structure is rendered convenient, the vertical risers at the several connections being made with right and left standard pipe-threads.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. The combination in a water-tube steam-- generatorof base distributing-pipes, a waterdrum centrally located below the normal water-level and a series of intermediate communicating pipe-loops composed of a single returnbend and arranged above the furnace-chamber, as set forth.
2. In a water-tube generator a fire-box having an end wall and side walls formed of closely-set vertical water-tubes supplied from horizontal base distributing-pipes, each vertical tube being combinedwith a single pipeloop arranged in two series across and above the furnace-chamber; a water-drum located below the normal water-level communicating with one series of said single loops, and an elevated steam and water drum communlcating with the other series of said single loops, as shown and described.

A water-tube steam-generator, comprising the following elements; horizontal base distributing-pipes 3; vertical side distributing-pipes 1 communicating therewith and with an elevated steam and water drum 2; a trans- -verse distributing-pipe 4: communicating with the vertical side distributing-pipes l and located above and at the front of the furnacechamber 5; a series of vertical circulatingpipes 12 rising from the longitudinal base distributing-pipes 3; a double series of single pipe-loops 13', connected with said risers 12 and arranged horizontally and transversely in the path of the rising furnace-gases, and communicating with the elevated steam and water drum2; a series of vertical circulating-pipes 9 rising from the rear transverse base distributing-pipe; ,a series of single pipe-loops 10 connected with said risers and arranged hori- ELBRIDGE G.
