MICA CHIMITEY.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915..
Application filed December 28, 1914. Serial No. 879,340.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. IIUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mica Chimneys, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to chimneys of the type ordinarily termed mica chimneys. In such chimneys the metallic frame-work is usually made as light as possible to hold the mica panels, and it has hitherto been a problemi to provide holding-means for the chimney and securely fasten the holdingmeans to the light frame-work;
This invention has for its object the construction of an improved form of holdingclip and the provision of improved means associated with the frame-work by which it is securely fastened thereto.
Figure 1 shows in elevation a mica chimney constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a relatively enlarged fragmentary elevation showing more particularly the improved means for assembling the spring clips with the chimney. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front view showing a slightly modified form of the invention, and, Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the parts shown in Fig. 4.
The chimney 10 is formed with a series, shown as four, of vertical metallic ribs or strips 11, which may be of the usual S form for holding the mica or other transparent panels 12 in place. The strips 11 are suitably held at their upper ends by a stidening ring or band 13, and at their lower ends by a stiiening ring or band 14. This ring or band 14 is folded up from its bottom, being substantially U-shape in cross section, and the lower ends of the strips 11 are or may be caught and held between these folds. In accordance with my invention the lower ends of two opposite strips 11, first have folded therearound a wider strip 15, which along with the ends of the strips 11 are inserted and pressed between the folds of the ring or band 14, the wider strips 15 extending upward some distance above the top of the ring or band 14, it being understood that said ring or band is relatively narrow and only wide enough to give the necessary stiness and rigidity to the chimney bottom. Through these upwardly projecting portions of the strip 15, which are thus positioned inside and outside, respectively, of the strip 11, and through the strip 11 itself, are punched spaced-apart slot-holes 16, preferably some little less in width than the strips 11, so as not to completely sever said strips. Through these holes are inserted a strip of metal adapted to form a springclip 17. This strip is, as shown, inserted inward through the upper hole with a bent down end-portion 18, at the outside, then bent downward on the inside, as seen at 19, and back outward through the lower hole, as seen at 20, with the clip proper projecting downward therefrom. The clip thus formed comprises a loop-like or angularlyformed shank-portion, extended through the two spaced-apart holes. In this way it will be understood that the relatively wide strip 15, reinforces the ribs 11, which would otherwise be unduly weakened by the holes therethrough which receive the spring-clips 17. Thus no separate attaching-means for holding the reinforcing-strip 15 is required, since this is securely and strongly held by the fitting and bending of the spring-clip member 17, therethrough in the manner described, and through the holes 16 to receive the spring-clip may be nearly as wide as the ribs 11, said ribs are so reinforced and stiffened that the resulting chimney structure is strong and serviceable.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I show a form of the invention that may be employed to advantage in some cases, as where it is desired to produce a chimney with the spring-clips 17 arranged at some distance from the bottom thereof. In this form it may not be desii-able to extend the reinforcing strips up as far as the point where these clips are to be applied, and I may in this case not extend said strips down to be engaged bythe folds of the bottom ring or band 14, but merely provide them as two separate pieces 21, at the inner and outer sides, respectively, of the ribs 11, the spring-clips 17 being fitted through spaced-apart holes in these pieces in the same way as heretofore described. Hence it will be understood that the reinforcing means engaging the ribs may be composed of a single piece or of two pieces.
I claim :h
1. A chimney composed of a metallic frame having spacedapart ribs to hold transparent panels, and means for securing a holding-clip to a rib consisting of a reinforcing element having relatively wide porof the rib with two spaced-apart holes therethrough, and a clip having an angularlyformed shank which extends through, both of said holes and presents its operative portion in holding position.
2. A chimney composed of a metallic frame having spacedapart ribsV to hold transparent panels, and means for securing a holding-clip to a rib consisting of a reinforcing element having relatively wide portions arranged at the inner and outer sides` of said rib with two spaced-apart holes through said portions and said rib, and a clip having a loop-like shank which is passed inward through one of' said holes and outward through the other hole and presents its operative portion in holding position. 3. A frame having vertical ribs and a ring or band at its bottom to hold transparent panels in position, and means for securing a holding-clip consisting in a stripy folded around a lower end off one of said ribs, assembled "with said ring or band and extending thereabove, there being spaced-apart holes through said strip `and said rib-,rand'v a clip having its shank extended through said holes in opposite directions and presenting y its operative portions in holding position.
4.-. A chimney composed Vof a metallic chimney composed of a metallicv framehaving spaced-'apart ribs and a bottom ring or band tohold-transparent panels,
said ring or band being folded upon itself, a relatively Wide strip folded around the bottom of a rib and in turn held in the fold of said band, there being spaced-apart holes through said strip and said rib, and a holding-clip having its'. shank passed through said holes and presenting its operative portion extending downward.
5. A chimney composed of a metallic frame work having spaced-apart ribs and a bottom ring or band to hold transparent panels, relatively wide reinforcing strips folded around the ends of a'plurality of said ribs and assembled witlrsaid ring or band, there being vertically arranged spaced-apartholes through said strips and saidY ribs, and clips consisting of strips passed inwardV through an upper hole and then downward and outward through alower hole, and having its upper and lower end-portions extended downward on the outside,rthe latter being toV form a resilient engaging-portion.
lIn testimony whereof, I have signed my name vto thisspecication, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
