CYRUS STEPHENS, OF FLAT ROCK, AND VINA IVI. CARTER, 0F COLUMBUS, INDIANA.
COMBINED COLLAPSIBLE TABLE AND LUNCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed October 13, 1913. Serial No. 794,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CYRUs STEPHENS and VINA M. CARTER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Rural Route No. 3 of Flat Rock, county of Shelby, and State of Indiana, and of the city of Columbus, county of Bartholomew, and State of Indiana, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Collapsible Tables and Lunch-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in combined collapsible tables and lunch boxes, and has for its obj ect the provision of a solid construction of this character which may be readily collapsed and packed in compact form.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be vbest understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a construction embodying our invention, Fig. 2, a bottom plan view of the same, and Fig. 3, an end View of the same.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a supporting stand provided with two supporting rails, each of said rails consisting of two slotted strips 1 arranged adjacent each other and adjustably secured together by means of bolts 2 passing through the slots therein. A loop or socket member 3 is arranged at the extreme outer or free end of each of the strips l and is adapted to receive the upper end of a corresponding supporting leg 4, said leg being provided with a stop 5 adapted to engage against the under side of loop 3, as indicated. Each of the loops 3 is formed by a metallic strip having its ends secured to the opposite sides of U-shaped strip l and inclosing a. space at the end thereof. A loop 6 is arranged on the under side of each of the rails 1 adjacent its outer end and a corresponding loop 7 is arranged on the inner side of each of the legs 4, said loops 6 and 7 serving as a means for securing braces 8 in position, each of said braces being provided with a projection 9 adapted to pass into the corresponding loop, as shown. The supporting legs 4 at each end of the stand are secured together by diagonal braces 10 thus forming in effect a supporting frame for each end of the stand. A foldable table top is arranged to rest upon the stand described above, said tabletop being made of heavy straw board or other suitable material and consisting of a central portion 11 and leaves 12 and 13 hinged at each end thereof. A lunch box 14 of any suitable or desired construction is secured to the under side of table portion 1l and leaves l2 and 13 are of such sizes as to fold nicely about said lunch boX, as will be readily understood. The construction disclosed may be readily taken apart, collapsed and packed into small space and also may be readily reassembled for use.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such Varia-v tions and modificationsv Vas come within the Y scope of the appended claim.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A construction of the class described comprising supporting rails; a socket at each end of each of said rails opening downwardly, each socket consisting of `a substantially U-shaped strip having its ends secured to opposite sides of said rails; a leg detachably engaging each socket; a stop on each leg limiting the movement thereof into its socket, a similar socket o n the inner edge of each leg intermediate its ends, corresponding sockets on the under edges of the rails adj as cent said leg sockets, a brace for each leg and angularly disposed members on the ends of said braces for engagement in said sockets on the legs and rails respectively, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence ofv two subscribing witnesses.
CYRUS STEPHENS. VINA M. CARTER.
