CARD-BOX FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2,1915.
Application filed June 7, 1913. Serial 170. 772.2%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lrnown that l, TnoMAs B. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Card-Boxes for Railroad-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to card boxes for railroad cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a water-proof card box for the reception and retaining of cards-more particularly those known as M. C. 13. cards. and one adapted to retain the card regardless of the position of the car to which the said card box is attached, as for instance when a car is overturned in discharging its load, or accidentallv over-turned.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of a card box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on line 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings 4 represents a hollow box, preferably rectangular in shape, and suitably designed to receive any form of card, the said box being provided with means of securing the same to the side of a railroad car, said means preferably comprising the lugs 5, 5 extended from the sides 6, 6 of said box, said lugs having the perforations 7, 7 for the reception of screws, and the rear side 8 of said box being provided with the perforation 9 to receive a screw.
T he bottom 10 of the box 1 is downwardly and outwardly beveled so as to maintain the card 32 in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which the bottom end of the card rests near the outer face of the box, and the upper end of the card rests against the rear inner face of the box. The box is provided at its upper end with the lugs 11, 11, the lid 12 being provided with similar lugs 13, 13; all of said lugs being perforated for the reception of the pin 11, thus forming a hinged connection between the lid 12 and the box 4:. The upper forward face of the box is provided with an opening 15, which is surrounded by a boxlike forwardly projecting member 16 formed by the upper plate 17, the side plates 18, 18 and a bottom plate 1.9.
The bottom plate 19' is downwardly inclined, the upper plate 17 being preferably of a lesser width than the bottom plate, and the side plates 18, 18 connecting the same are preferably of a greater width at the lower end than at the upper end. The upper plate 17 is provided on its upper face with a groove 20 extending the length thereof, which groove joins at either end with an upright groove 21 provided on the outer face of each of the sides 18 of the member 16. The lower plate 19 is provided with a perforation 22 extending through the same, and the bottom of the box 10 is provided near its forward edge with a perforation 23 extended therethro ugh.
The lid 12 of the box comprises a plate 24:, having at its lower edge the lug 25 to permit the easy lifting of the same, the said plate having at its upper ends the inwardly turned flange 26 and at its sides the inwardly turned flanges 27, 27. When the lid is in closed position, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the flange 26 covers the top plate 17 of the member 16, and the side flanges 27, 27 of the lid engage the outer faces of the side plates 18 of the member 16. The said flanges 27, 27 conform in shape to the side plates 18, 18 so that when the lid is closed the inner edges 28 of the flanges 27, 27 engage the forward side of the box 4 along the surfaces indicated by the numeral 29 and adjacent the forwardly projecting member 16.
The hinging of the lid at the top of the box in the manner described, and the shape of the same, as hereinbefore described, causes the weight of the lid to maintain the lid in its closed position. The fitting of the flanges of the lid about the forwardly projecting member 16 makes the box t when closed by the lid 12 waterproof. If by any chance, however, moisture should an ter between the lid and box the groove 20 in the upper plate 17 is adapted to convey the same to the downward grooves 21 in the side plates 18, 18, and thus discharge said moisture without permitting the same to enter the box t, and if by any further chance the moisture should enter the interior of the projecting member 16 the same will gather enter the box at times when cards are being placed in or removed from said box.
,In preferable construction the forward 7 face of the box immediately below the openmg is provided with an inwardly projecting transverse rib 30 to assist in keeping the card from entering the opening 15 should the car to which the box is applied be over-turned. At its upper end the rear interior face of the box is provided with verticalribs 31, 31, which cause the card 32 to be slightly removed from the rearinterior face of the box so as to enable the easy removal of the card whenits removal is desired.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a card placed within my card box cannot be accidentally removed in any position the card box may assume; that the weight of the cover will keep the box closedin anyof the normal positions of the box when attached to the car; that the closure of the lid about the forwardly projecting member 16 makes a waterproof joint as the flanges of the lid fit snugly about the member 16, and that the contingency of leakage is provided for in such manner by the grooves 20 and 21 and the perforation 22 in the downwardly inclined member 19that the card within the box 4 must be dryat all'times, thus guarded 1 against destruction, and the memorandum thereonagainst'defacement or obliteration.
I claim 1. A card box of the character described, comprising, a hollow member provided with an opening on, the front side thereof near -'the top through which a card may be ininserted and readily removed, said member being provided with an outwardly extended box like flange surrounding said opening, said flange having the side portions thereof inclined downwardly and outwardly and a lid pivotally' connected to the said member,
at the top thereof, said lid having flanges on top and sides thereof fitting over the boxlike flange'surrounding the opening whereby-to close said opening-and prevent ram or the like entering within the box. V
