To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EINAR W. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upland, in the county of Divide and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in post pullers, and more particularly to that class of post pullers which are manually operated.

An object of this invention is the provision of a post puller which comprises a handled rocking frame which is supported upon a pair of standards, the frame carrying dogs on its opposite ends, the dogs being adapted for alternate engagement in the post upon upward and downward move-. ment of the handle, whereby the post is withdrawn gradually from the 'ground, upon movement of the handle in each direction.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a manually operated post puller, which comprises a minimum number of parts, whereby the same may be cheaply manufactured, the device being adapted for ready movement from one post to another, and being applicable to posts of different sizes.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

A rectangular rocking frame is provided, the frame consisting of a pair of complemental sections 7, the opposite ends of the sections being provided with outwardly exed in position around the post 2. The bore of each of the tubular dogs 11 is threaded, for the reception of the threaded ends of the teeth 18, the teeth 13 being adapted for engagement into the body of the post 2. The free end of each dog is provided with a peripheral flange 14, the flanges being adapted to limit the engagement of the Springs 15 are con nected to the frame for engagement against the dogs 11, to normally'force the same inwardly so that the teeth 13 engage the periphery of the post.

In the practical use of my device, when it is desired to extract the stump of a post from the ground, the base plates 1 and the connecting rods 4 thereof are dropped over the stump so that the plates rest upon the ground on opposite sides thereof and the frame is then placed over the stump so that the notches 12 in the sections of the frame engage the pins 6 in the standards, in which position the frame is supported for rocking movement with the teeth 13 of/ the dogs engaging the periphery of the post. It will be seen that when the handle 9 is moved upwardly, the tooth carried. by the dog on'the inner end of the frame is forced into the 'body of the post so that the post is moved upwardly with the handle, and upon downward movement of the handle, the tooth 13 in the dog carried by the outer end of the Y frame is forced into the body of the pest to move the post upwardly upon continued downward movement of the handle. it will. be apparent that upon continued rocking movement of the frame, the post will be gradually withdrawn from the ground whereupon the device may be carried to another short post or stump and connected thereto in the same manner. If it is desired to connect my device to a relatively tall post, the sections of the frame and the base plates are separated and placed upon opposite sides of the post and are then connected in the before described manner so that the teeth of the dogs engage the periphery of the post whereupon the post may be Withdrawn from the ground by the rocking of the frame. The teeth 13 may be adjusted With relation to the dogs ll, so that the projecting portions of the teeth may be lengthened or shortened, as desired, depending upon the hardness of the Wood of the posts upon which the device is used.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a post puller which may be readily set up in position to extract posts of various sizes from the ground, the device being readily movable from place to place for engagement with different posts. 1

While the construction illustrated is the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will me understood that minor changes in construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, as determined by the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described comprising a handled rocking frame mounted upon a suitable support, pivoted dogs carriedby the opposite ends of said frame, and teeth adjustably mounted on said dogs, as and for the purpose described.

2. A post puller comprising a pair of base plates detachably connected together, standardskmounted'upon the :base plates for engagement upon opposite sides of a post, a

' rocking frame mounted upon the upper ends of said standards, said frame being adapted to encircle the post, a handle carried by said frame, and dogs pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said frame and adapted for engagement at their free ends with the periphery of said post, as and for the purpose described. w

3. A post puller comprising a supporting structure, a handled rocking frame mounted upon said supportlng structure, said frame being adapted to encircle the post, dogspivotally mounted in the opposite ends of said frame, and adjustable teeth carried by said dogs for engagement with the periph cry of said scribed. y
