TRES'TLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,979, dated October 16, 1900.
Application filed July 13, 1900. Serial No. ZSABZ. (No model.)
To ctl whont it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Mills and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Ii'nprovements in Trestles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trestles 5 and the objects of the same are to provide a simple, strong, and efficient device of this character which can be used for any purpose as a support for workmen, which can be cheaply manufactured, which can be easily and quickly adjusted and handled, and which, although comparatively light in weight, forms a rigid and properly-braced support or trestle. These objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a trestle made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the head of the trestle. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the dog which holds the put-log in place. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the brace-rod for holding the end leg in place.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts wherever they occur in the different views.
In said drawings the numeral 1 designates the head of the trestle-legs and consists of a block or piece of wood or metal having a slot 2 at its upper end to form the recess for the put-log 3 and the inclined leg-sockets 4 4 4 in its under side. The upper ends of the legs 5 5 are inserted in the sockets 4 1 and are held firmly in place therein by a tie rod or bolt 6, having a thumb-nut fitted to one end thereof, as shown. The cross-brace 7 extends from one leg 5 to the other at a point near the longitudinal center of the trestle, and a headed tie-bolt 8 extends through the legs 5 and through the brace 7. A thumb-nut is fitted to the end of bolt 8 for holding the legs and brace rigidly together.
An end leg 9 serves to brace the trestle against endwise movement, and the upper end of this leg 9 is held in the socket 4. in the head 1. A bolt 12 passes through the head 1 to hold the leg 9 in position and to form a fulcrum for a pivoted dog 13. This dog has a pointed hook it at its outer end, which is designed to be driven into the put-log 3 when all the parts are adjusted. A thumb-nut 15 is used for clamping these parts together when adjusted.
To brace the end leg 9 at the desired inclination, braces 16 extend from'opposite sides of the leg 9 and are secured to said log by a bolt 9, and the opposite ends of the braces are bent downward to form toes or hooks 17, which engage holes in the upper surface of cross-brace 7.
It will be understood that while but one of the ends or tripods of the trestle has been described there are two used, and they are of substantially identical structure, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It will be obvious from the forgoing that my trestle is simple in construction, of comparatively few parts, easily adjustable, and which can be readily taken apart and packed in a small space for shipping or for moving from place to place. When the trestle is set up for use, it is braced from all directions and is strong, durable, and efficient for its purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A trestle comprising the metallic heads each having three inclined sockets in the under sides and a slot in the upper ends, inclined legs fitted into said sockets and secured by bolts, braces for holding said legs in relativelyinclined positions, a put-log seated in the slots in the upper ends of the metallic heads, and dogs pivoted one to each metallic head and provided each with a prong driven into the put-log, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
MICHAEL MILLER.
