Description

F. SOHUTZE.
FOLDING BOX AND SHOW CARD.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 24, 1914' Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
HE NORRIS PETERS CD, PH Ta-LITHO WASHINGTON. D. c.
FREDERICK SCHUTZE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FOLDING BOX AND SHOW-CARD.
nisasos.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Sonurzn, a subject of the King of England, residing at London, England, have invented a new and useful Folding Box and Show-Card, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined folding box and show card.
Another object of my invention is to so arrange the combination that the show card can be folded and then serves to form the rear side and top and bottom portions of the box, while the front side and end portions of the box are adapted to be folded flat against the empty show card for storing purposes, to be easily erected for packing purposes, and to be detached without disfiguring the show card when the latter is to serve for exhibiting articles for sale.
In order that my invention may be readily understood and carried into practice, I have hereunto annexed one sheet of illustrations to which reference is made in the following description.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the extended show card with the supplementary box portion projecting from the front thereof; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of same; Fig. 3, a top-edge view of the card,
with the box portion folded flat; Figs. 4L, 5
and 6 are a plan, a transverse section and a perspective view corresponding to F1g. 1;
Figs. 7 and 8 are a rear elevation and a sideelevation of a stiffener and stay for the rear of the show card; Fig. 9 1S a perspective view OI the show card and stay with broken I portions of the box-attachment; and Fig. 10
an end view of the box and card folded together for the protection of the contents.
The show card 1 is marked at the rear with two transverse scores 2 which form folding lines for the card on the front of which are provided or fixed racks 3 or other devices for the reception of articles for sale. Projecting from the front of the card between the folding lines 2 is a box-attachrnent or body consisting of a forward side-portion 4 and end portions 5 and 6, the latter being fixed to the card 1 by flaps 7. The material of the box-attachment is of greater width than the space between the lines 2 of the card and is scored longitudinally at 8 and 9 to about the same width as the card and is cut transversely or clipped at the corners so as to provide top flanges 10, 11, 12, and bot- Specification of Letters Patent.

tom flanges 13, lt and 15. A crease 16 is formed across the width of the box-attachment to enable same to be folded flat against the card by the manufacturer so as to save space in storing as will be observed from Fig. 3 of the illustrations.
When the card 1 is stocked with articles for sale and is to be made ready for cartage or transport, the upper and lower portions of the card are folded on the lines 2 so as to enter the box-attachment, the edges of the card forming a loose fit within the latter. The top and bottom flanges 10, 11, 12 and 13, 14;, 15 are then turned down in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 5, after which a tie, say a string or other securing means, is applied to the folded box.
For subsequently showing the card in a shop or other premises, the box-attachment is removed or torn off from the back of the card, and the latter can then be hung up in the usual manner by a string secured in the holes 17. If the card is to stand in an upright position a stay is applied to the back thereof to serve as a stiflener and prevent the card from doubling up unintentionally.
The stay is shown separately in Figs. 1 and 8 and consists of a rectangular strip 18 of cardboard integral with a wing-shaped portion 19, a longitudinally scored line 20 enabling the two portions to be turned over at right angles to one another. The wing 19 has two flaps 21 cut out of the material which can be turned outward from the wing and press with the edges against the back of the card in order to keep the wing standing rearwardly and support the card, the bottom edge of the wing being cut with a suitable slant. The two end portions of the strip 18 can be engaged in loops 22 fixed to the back of the card.
I claim:
A combined folding box and show card consisting of a card scored transversely adapted to formtop and bottom and one of the sides of a box, an attachment for the card which is scored longitudinally and clipped so as to form one side, two ends and top and bottom flanges for the box, and a combined stay and stiffener for the back of said card, as and for the purpose stated.
