I NICKOLAAS 'VN DYKE, 0F BAKIERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED PISTQN ANH) SPARK-PLUG SHIELD.
ToaZZ 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, NIcKoLAAs WAN Dran, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bakersfield, in the county' of Kern and State of Californie, have invented certain new and i useful.Y improvements in Combined f Pistonfend Spark-Plug Shields; and I do declarethe following to-he a full, clear, and cxactdescriptionof the invention, such as Will/enable othersskilled in the art to which it sppertains tounnke and use the seine.
My invention relates broadly to improvements in internal combustion engines 'and more particulerly to those having valves in the heads of their cylinders. 1t is e wellknown fact that with many types of engines of this character, the valve stems or the valves themselves, are prone to break under high pressure within thel cylinder, orrough usage. The result is thatv the valve drops Within the cylinder und upon the ascent of the piston, the cylinder head, the cylinder,
and the piston, are often injured. it is to overcome this most objectionable feature that I have desi ned my invention.
A. further obgect of the invention is toprovide means whereby. cil, thrown up- Wnrdly'gloy the rising pistons, may be deflected. against the vulves and whereby the spark plug will be shielded and will, therefore, be )rotec'ted ugninst'ssid oil.
. A stil further object ci the invention is to design structure fon carrying out the objects ci' the invention, -which muy he formed of u single metal plete.
JV ith the] ttboveohjects in View, the invention' resides incertain novel features ot constructirni und combination herein described sud claimed and shown in the drswings wherein.:
iiigure l is s vertical section through e cylinder heed equipped with overhead valves and n portion of its cylinder, show- I. ing the sppliczltion of my invention. th creto; i5
Fig. 2 is a vertical section teken st right angles to Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is u bottom plan view of the cylinder head detached, showing more particularly the speciic construc-v tion of the shield.
ln the accompanying drawings, l lieve illustrated the upper portion of scylinder C which is provided with s, heed H,'the latter having the usual internal vulve seats S and inwardly opening vnives V, which 155 latter are designed to eutouuiticelly control the inlet and exhaust gases to and from the Specification of Letters Eatent.

cylinder. rihe head is further provided with :i threaded opening O for the reception' of a spark plug l) able construction.
Coming now more particularly to the cletsils of the present invention and its application, ll lieve shown Vmy improved shield as includin a .ring lvwhich is adapted to he positioned in an annuler recess R which is formed on the iower side of the cylinder which may he of any suithead. Extending transversely across the ring 1 sind integrally united :it their oppo- 1s c. e third transverse bar 3 extending at right angles to said bars 2 and being integrally unlted therewith and with the ring l, while spaced from sind bur 3 and secured at their pair of parallel hars 2, y
opposite ends to the bars Zend to the ring,n 1,
are transverse bars e, the latter being connected to the bar 3 by means of' integral bars 5 which are located in parallel relation to the hars 2. linal cross bar 6, lying parallel to the bar 3, and united at its'opp-ositc ends to the bars completes the means for preventing the valves V fiom dropping into the 'cylinder incase of hren/nge As, most clearly shown in Fig. 3, the tar 6 is posi'- tioned, nearer the center of the ring than the bars d, this positioning being found most connection with the accompanying druiv- A ings, it will be seen that l have produced ai device for carrying out the objects 'of the invention which may be simply Vand inexpensively constructed.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim us new and' desire to secure ioy Let ters Potent, is
l. The combination with an engine cylinv expedient in order that on upwardly und'inder having avilve und gus ignitmg moons l in its head, ot e .grutlng across smid cylinder between its head and its piston, und snoil deiiecting plete carried by the grating and iyng'between the ig'niting'means and the piston. I v l 2, The combinationl with 'an engin e5/1indei' .havin a valve and gas igniting means 5 in itshea ,1 of a grating acrossther cylinder der having a vulve, and gas ignitmg moans and its piston,
in its head,v of afg'uting' between its head y und an angulurly disposed 15 oil deecting plate between said piston and the igniting means and formed integrally with the grating.
In testimony whereof I haveJ hereunto set my lhand in presence of two 'subscribing 2 witnesses.
