- Assuming the piston 12 is at cranlrward' dead center, the sleeve valve 11 will be approximately inthe position of crank end dead center, the exhaust ports 15 will be open to the combustion chamber, the residual gases will be exiting therefrom, through the recesses 17 formed-in the crank end of the cylinder head, theinlet `ports 14 of the sleeve'valve will be open to theV transf verse passage 16,V a preconipressedY fresh charge ofgaseous mixture vwill be kpassingA in columnrinovenient, through the said inlet ports of the sleeve valve, through the transversepassage 16 of the cylinder head,

I claim as my invention:
lf In an internal combustion engine, a sleeve valve, a depending cylinder head,
a transverse passage in the abutment of the said cylinder head, the said transverse passage extending,- centrally through the said head' Withopenings through the periphery of the said head at oppositely disposed points, two oppositely disposed recesses formed at the end edge of the abutment of the cylinder head, the said recess being in substantially the same plane as the plane ofthe said transverse passage, the said recessesbeing formed at points equally disposed circumferentially between the said openings of the transverse passage through the peripheryof the said cylinderhead; -a venturi formed throat formed at the center of the said cylinder head, said throat providing a central opening cranlwardly from the said trans verse passage, the roof of the said recesses being formed as a semi-circular contour extending headwardly and radially, and ignition means located in the cylinder head with thel sparking terminals extending into the transverse passage in the said cylinder head.
2. A depending cyinder head forV sleeve valve type internal combustion engines, a transverse fresh charge inlet passage formed in the said cylinder head, inlet openings of l the said transverse passage formed through the periphery of the said cylinder head at each end of the said transverse passage; an outlet opening of the saidrtransverse vpassage formed in the end ofthe said cylinder head, recesses formed in the end edge of the said cylinder'head for the deflection of the residual gases within the chamber enclosed by the said cylinder head, and ignition means located in the cylinder head, the sparking terminals of which protrude into the said transverse charge inlet passage.
