specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 116, 1915.,
Application filed March 20, 1914. Serial No. 826,069.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, .l'osnrn: B. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in bottle attachments, and has for its object to provide an attachment of the character specified, adapted for connection with the neck of a bottle, especially those containing poisonous substances, and having means for encircling the stopper of the bottle to prevent the removal of the stopper without striking the attachment to Warn the person handling the bottle concerning the contents of the same.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a side view of a bottle provided with the improvement, with parts in section.
As is known, accidents frequently happen in dispensing drugs by reason of the dispenser getting hold of the wrong bottle. When bottles are placed in a certain order, those having access to the bottles become accustomed to the order, and in dispensing, the selection of the several bottles, is to a great extent mechanical, the dispenser taking the bottles from their position with a hand directed in accordance with his memory of the plan of the arrangement of the bottle. Were the bottles always in their regular order, such accidents would not occur, but the order is liable to be disarranged by other persons having access thereto. Neither is it always convenient to have a particular type of bottle for poisons, neither as regards color or external arrangement, yet it is desirable to have some attachment that may be connected with any bottle that will furnish a sure and certain warning to the dispenser as to the character of the contents of the bottle. The present invention is designed for this purpose and is constructed in such manner that it may be connected with the neck of any bottle and when so connected, access may not be had to the cork without the dispenser receiving sure and certain warning as to the character ofthe bottles contents.
The improvement is shown in connection with the neck 1 of a bottle 2 of ordinary construction. The neck is provided with the usual external annular rib 3, at its top and the usual stopper 4 is provided for closing the neck.
The improvement comprises a wire or rod which is bent to form a series of spiral coils 5, and a second series 6, the series 5 being at one end and the series 6 at the other. The coils of the series 5 gradually decrease in diameter toward their connection with the coils of the series 6, so that the figure formed by the series of coils is of frustro-conical form. The coils of series 6 are of approxi mately the same diameter so that the figure formed by the said coils is cylindrical. The coils of series 6 are adapted to engage the neck 1 of the bottle externally between the rib 3 and the body of the bottle, and to embrace the said neck sufficiently tight to hold the attachment in place. The coils of series 5 are spaced apart from each other as shown, and suliicient coils are provided to cause the free end 7 of the wire or rod at the said end to stand well above the top of the cork or stopper of the bottle. An open frustroconical framework is thus provided, which incloses the stopper and which extends beyond the upper end of the same. The wire or rod is resilient, so that the coils 6 of the attachment may be slipped over the neck of the bottle and so that the coils 5 may be pressed together to permit access to the cork for removing the same. The attachment is in effect an open framework for inclosing the stopper to prevent access thereto, and having means for engaging the neck of the bottle to hold the framework in place around the stopper.
It will be obvious that any preferred form of connection for engaging the bottle might be provided, the coils 6 being used because of the simplicity and ease with which the entire attachment may be formed from a single piece of wire or rod.
The improved attachment is especially designed for connection with bottles of any character merely by slipping the coils 6 over the neck. The attachment is always in place, and as soon as the coils are released after dispensing the contents of the bottle, they expand as shown in Fig. 2 into operative position. The cork may be easily removed by depressing the coils 7, but it cannot be grasped even from the outer end of the attachment without a portion of the attachment striking the fingers, thus giving warn; ing of the character of the contents of the bottle. The spiralarrangement of the coils permits the coils to lie one Within the other When the said coils are compressed or pressed toward each other.
I claim p 1. An attachment of the character specified, comprising a resilient Wire or red bent to form aseries of spiral coils spaced apart from each other and gradually decreasing to he one Within the other When they are pressed together to permit access to the stopper.
2. An attachment of the character specified, comprising a resilient Wire or rod bent to form a series of spiral coils spaced apart from each other, and a second series of coils at the other end of less diameter than the coils of the first-named series and of approximately equal diameter, the lastna1ned coils being adapted to engage the neck of a bottle, and the first-named coils forming an open framework inclosing the stopper and extending beyond the same.
3. An attachment of the character specified, comprising a Wire or rod bent to form a series of spiral coils at one end and having at the other end means for engaging the neck of a bottle to support the coils in position around the stopper of the bottle, the coils gradually decreasing in diameter toward the bottle engaging means to cause the coils to lie one Within the other when. compressed.
l. An attachment of the character specified, comprising an open compressible fra1ne- WOlk of Wire adapted to encircle the neck of a bottle, and having means for engaging the neck to support the framework in position around the stopper, and being compressible to permit access to the stopper.
