DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application filed. June 26, 1914. Serial N 0. 847,476.
all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY L. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door catches, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a catch of simple construction designed to be used on doors of cabinets, cupboards and other small pieces of furniture which will quickly open a door when a push button is pressed upon from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door catch of simple construction in which the entire catch is inclosed 0n the inner side of the door and that the device is operated by a push button upon the outer side of the door.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a fragmentary view in elevation and section of the lower corner of a door and door casing having a door catch made in accordance with this invention and connected to the door casing and door, Fig. 2 is a View of the edge of the door casing and showing the catch in place thereon, the door casing being shown in section around the push button.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the door casing for a cabinet or cupboard, and 2 is a door hinged within said casing.
The numeral 3 designates the sill or base of the door casing.
Connected to the door casing 1 at the door opening is a spring plate 4, said plate being connected to the casing 1 by means of a keeper 5 which extends up at the sides of the spring and is provided with a cross bar 6. The spring plate 4 is provided with an offset 7 and a downwardly extending portion 8 spaced at a slight distance from the casing l and provided with an intermediate spiral spring 9 which bears at one end against the projection 8 and at the opposite end against the casing 1, the tension of said spring being exerted to hold the spring plate fiat against the casing 1 upon the inner side thereof. Formed upon one edge of the plate 4 is a hook 10 provided with a downwardly extending bill 11 designed to engage a pin or other projection 12, secured to and extending from the edge of the door 2 and adapted to be engaged by the hook 10.
A push button comprising a shank 13 extending through the casing 1 in alinement with the spring plate 4 is provided with a head 14. When the push button 14 is pushed inward against the spring plate 4, the latter is looked upon its pivotal point 6 and the hook 10 is raised from connection with the pin 12.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a door catch made in accordance with this invention is simple in construction, can be manufactured at low cost, can be quickly connected to any door without special tools and without special fastening means, that the entire portion of the catch exposed is a push button at the outer side of the door casing and that when the push button is operated, the door may be swung open upon its hinges.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is A door catch comprising a plate pivotally connected to the inner side of a door casing, said plate having an offset portion, a spring for holding the plate against the inner side of the door casing, a hook formed on the said plate, and extended at right angles between the door and the casing, a pin connected to the edge of the door to be engaged by said hook, and a push button extending through the casing and normally bearing against said plate, said push button adapted to be operated for releasing the hook from the projecting pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROY L. THOMPSON.
