To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, JOHN A. BROBERG, citizen of the United States, residing at Lin coln, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Hames and Collars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hames of harnesses and arranged to serve likewise as a horse collar, or combining a horse collar with hames, and has for one of its objects to increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be adapted to hames of different sizes without material structural change in the form or outline of the same.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is an elevation from the bearing side of a pair of hames with a collar attachment applied thereto, the collar attachment being in section on one of the hames. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view illustrating a modification in the construction.

In the improved device the hames are precisely alike except that they are rights and lofts, and they are constructed in the usual outline or form and may be of metal or wood, or a combination of wood or metal as may be preferred, and it is not desired therefore, to limit the invention in any manner in this respect, but for the purpose of illustration, the improved device is shown arranged in Figs. 1 and2 applied to a conventional wood hame, while in Fig. 3 the invention is shown applied to a conventional metal hame.

The body of the hame, as indicated conventionally at 10, is of the usual outline and provided with strap receiving recesses 11 at the outer end and provided with metal binding straps 12 of the usual form which extend over the recesses and form closures to their outer sides. is not shown, as it forms no partof the invention and any of the various fastening or coupling devices may be employed. The bearing face, or the face which is disposed next to the horse, is usually rounded and tively long longitudinal recess which comes opposite the shoulders of the horse when the hames are applied. The portions of the body l0 at the sides of the hollow or depression 14: thus form ribs which operate as stops-to protect the filling material, as hereafter explained. Each hame is provided with a flexible covering, indicated at 15, of leather, rubber, or like material, and completely incloses the recess 14: and extends beyond the same at the ends, as shown. The space between the body 10 and the covering and including the recess or depression is filled with a suitable yieldable packing materlal such as hay, hair, or the like, or the material which is usually employed for the filling of horse collars. The recesses 1e are relatively deep and the outer curvature of thecovering 15 is relatively large, so that a relatively large amount of the filling material, indicated at 16 may be employed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 thus materially increasing the cushioning effect and producing the same result as with the ordinary horse collar. The portions of the body 10 at the sides of the depression 14 assist in holding the covering 15 spaced away from the bottom of the depression, and thus likewise protect the filling 16 and prevent it from being crushed by any abnormal pressure to which the device may be sub- ]ected. The Widest and largest portion of the recess 14 and the packing 16 is located opposite the shoulder bones of the animal, thus protecting the animal from undue pressure or the formation of sores or abrasions from inequal or abnormal strain or friction.

By employing the simple device illustrated, the ordinary horse collar and-pad are dispensed with, as the improved device combines all the advantages and utility of out materially increasing the expense over the ordinary hames.
