HARNESS -SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,642, dated July 22, 1890.
Application filed December 9, 1889- Serial No, 333,094. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK REHKoPE, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention is a further improvement on that patented to me March 19, 1888, and numbered 399,697; and it relates to a special construction of those parts, both of the saddle portion and of each of the side plates or flaps, which are movably connected together.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of my improved saddle; Fig. 2, a view of the central plate and one side ,plate detached; Fig. 3, a view of the hinge from beneath.
A indicates the central or saddle plate, and B B the two side plates, jointed thereto and extending a short distance under-them, as seen at Z). Plate A has at each of its extrem ities a short tongue-like projection c, tern1inated by a rigid cylindrical bar or spindle d, these bars constituting fixed integral parts of the plate, but of a length less than the width of the side plates B, but greater than the width of the projection 0, thus leaving spaces 6 6 between the plate and the projecting ends cl of the bar d. This bar (1 adds m uch strength to the structure and does not throw the main strain or stress upon any mere hinge or parts of a hinge, but causes the flat tongue 0 and its bar (I to bear directly 011 the broad flat under side of the plates B B. The under or side plates B B have their ends which eonnect with this saddle-plate also specially constructed and adapted for the features already above described. Each has at its inner side a transverse slot E, whose shorter portion f merges into a still longer portion g, which is beyond the hinging-line and in its extended inner end, and those parts h h of these plates which are intended to serve as journal-bearings for the projecting ends cl of the spindle havedepressiol'ls 2' to receive such ends, and on the under side of these plates B are formed curved tongues k, intended to be respectively bent around the ends (1 when the parts are 'put together for use, such bent tongues and the depressions 1' together constituting journal-boxes for the ends of the bar.
The longer portion g of theslots E permits the introduction of the rigid'bar through it when putting the parts together, notwithstanding such bar is materially longer than the slot itself, while the shoulders Z, conjointly with the bearings and the curved tongues, prevent any possibility of the bar slipping out into this partg of the slot.
The other features of the saddle need not be particularly described, as they may be made like those in my above-named patent, or otherwise, as preferred.
By my invention it will be now seen that the strain does not come upon the bent ears, but is about equally divided between the jointed plates themselves; that there is little liability of breakage; that there is no tendency to unbend or break the ears, as the press ure is not on them, but away from them; that the casting of the flaps also requires no insertion of a bar in the slot, and which when so cast is held therein only at its ends, while the bar d in my present invention is firmly held throughout nearly its whole length and as if an integral part of the flap.
I claim- I11 a harness-saddle, the combination, with the saddle-plate A, provided at each of its ends with a substantially T-shaped bar or portion whose ends extend beyond the width of its narrower portion, of the side plates B B, each of which is provided with a transverse slot E, whose length is somewhat shorter than such bar, and also provided on its under side with tongues adapted to be bent to hold the bar when inserted in said slot, substantially as set forth.
FREDRICK REHKOPF.
