To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. HUB- BARB, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved cardboard box for the packaging of cigarettes or other loose articles beneath an elastic band. The method ofproducing this type of box has been set forth in a co-pending application of mine filed of even date herewith, Serial No. 833,425.

The object of this invention is to provide an ornamental, inexpensive and efficient containing box with an elastic band to hold the articles in place and particularly with an elastic band that is so secured that it cannot be readily detached from the material to which it is secured.

The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of one side and a part of the other side of the box. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line 4 4, Fig. 2.

As shown in the drawings, the box comprises two faces or

trays

1 and 2, each formed of a dished-up blank having a bottom 3 and curved side walls 1. An elastic band 5 forms a bridge 6 across the space S between the bottom of the box and the band itself, for the purpose of retaining the cigarettes. Its ends are inturned and held in place by pasting and by virtue of being embedded in the material of the sloping sides Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the box tray. A finishing paper 7 conceals the pasted ends of the band from view and forms a finish for the bottom of the box. The edges 8 of thebox preferably; project substantially parallel with the planes of the top and bottom walls and serve as a convenient means for attaching hinge 9 of fabric or other material, and also afford broad bearings for the box halves in closing.

By the foregoing construction a cardboard box can be provided with a retaining hand in a simple, effective and inexpensive manner, an excellent appearance is secured, and the band is very firmly held. It will be understood that I am not necessarily limited to the precise construction shown and that various changes may be made without departing from the invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. A cardboard box, comprising hinged box members, and an elastic band bridging the interior of one of said members and having its ends pressed into the material of the inner face of the member.

2. In a cardboard box, a box member having sloping sides, and an elastic band disposed across the interior of the box member and having its endsinturned and pressed into the faces of said sloping sides.

3. In a cardboard box, a box member having sloping sides, an elastic band having its ends inturned and pressed into the faces of said sloping sides, and a finishing sheet covering the bottom of the box member and said inturned ends.
