FOLDING BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,454, dated January 7, 1902.

Application filed March 28, 1899. Renewed November 7, 1901. Serial No. 81,489. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. MCCORMICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding boxes.

The invention has for its object the provision or construction of a box of the abovedescribed class that can be folded into small compass for shipment or other purposes.

Another object is to construct the box so that it will retain its rigidity while extended or in use.

With the above objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail. I

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved box as the same would appear when set up 'or in use. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the box with the lid partly opened, exposing the interior. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the box partly folded up. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the box when fully folded up.

In said views I have shown a box constructed of cardboard or other material, either uncovered or covered with cloth or other suitable material, said box being composed of the bottom piece 1 and sides 2 and 2', which, together with the lid, are preferably'made of one piece. The rear side may be slightly the higher, the lid 3 being attached to the rear side by any suitable means, forming a hinge. Around the lid may be formed a flange 3.

The ends of the box at may be made of canvas, prepared cloth, or any suitable material. These end pieces may be sewed, cemented, or otherwise fastened to the sides and bottom, either on the outer or inner side of the box. The ends are creased diagonally across from corner to corner to facilitatefolding and cause them to fall down neatly into position. A pair of stiff end pieces 5, composed of cardboard or other suitable 1 material, may be hinged upon the inside of either the back, bottom, or front and are capable of being swung into position, as seen in Fig. 4:, to form substantial ends for the box. The box when set up may be secured by straps 6 and 6, making a convenient article of neat appearance. For convenience in carrying the box a pair of straps 7 may be secured upon the lid, and within these straps the handle 8 may be loosely fitted, which may be pressed down flush with the top. In closing the box the end pieces 5 can be swung back into position, as shown in Fig. 5. The front piece is then folded down flat upon the bottom. In this movement the flexible ends first bulge outward, as shown in Fig. 5. The bottom and front are then folded up flat againstthe back. In this movement the flexible ends spring inward. The top is then folded over the'whole, in which condition for shipping or other purposes it will occupy only a fraction of the space that it otherwise would.

Slight variations may be made in the detail parts without departing from the principles involved. I therefore desire to reserve such right to change or modify such parts at will, as

well as making the covering or ends of leatherette or any other suitable material.

Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

A folding box, the top, bottom, and front and rear sides of which are formed continu one and uncreased except at the edges, and the front is of a less width than the back whereby it may be folded between the bottom and the back and the top may be folded over the bottom, flexible end pieces, each of which is creased diagonally and adapted to be folded between the front and the bottom and back respectively, two rigid end pieces, each being hinged at one edge to the interior of the box and adapted to be folded against the side to which it is secured, and a handle and means for securing the top to the front.
