To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. KAHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an interchangeable initial or monogram buckle, and has for its main object the provision of a clasp that can be assembled .by the merchant and whereby he may derive any desired combination from a stock of letters instead of being compelled to have the article constructed as ordered.

Another object of my invention is to provide a buckle that is simple in constructiofi, and that is durable and ornamental as we L I attain the above objects by the device illustrated in the following views, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout.

Figure 1 is a front view of one of my buckles shown assembled, with a combination of initial letters therein; Fig. 2 shows the same in combination with a monogram or seal; Fig. 3 is a detail view. of the background plate upon which the letters or seal are mounted; Fig. 4 is a like view of said background plate shown with a combination of letters mounted upon it; Fig. 5 is a rear view of the frame of the buckle, shown with the background plate removed; Fig. 6 is an end elevation of my buckle; Fig. 7 is a detail of the form of letter employed, andFig. 8 is a rear view of the seal shown in Fig. 2, showing the way the seal is altered making it capable of being assembled within the frame. In carrying out my invention, I provide a substantially rectangular frame 10, which may be plain as I have shown it, or which may be ornamented and upon the back of which are provided the well known form of a hook 11, and guide 12, used generally on buckles of this type. Around the inner periphery of the frame, on the rear side, is an offset shoulder, 13, into which fits a background or plate member 11,and upon the front side of which are assembled the Patented Feb. 9, 1915.

letters, or seal, as the case may be. This plate is secured in place by leaf members 15, integral with the rear face of the top shoulder 13, and protruding a short distance beyond same, and by a button 16, pivoted centrally of the lower bar of the frame 10. Upon the top and bottom edge of said plate lel, and suitably spaced, are punched a series of spring tongues or clips 17 which are likewise raised the thickness of the letters above the surface of the plate, each being provided centrally with a punch mark or depression, 18, as shown. The form of letters employed are of the height of the plate, but with their tops and bottoms elongated the width of the tongues 17, and upon these elongated portions are punched the depressions 19, corresponding respectively to, and

registering with, the depressions 18 on said tongues. When a seal is employed (Figs. 2 and 8,) vertical lugs 20 are made integral with its rear surface, protruding beyond its top and bottom edges and corresponding to the elongated portion on the letters as described.

In the assembling of my buckle, the desired letters are slipped under the clips or tongues on the plate 14:, until the depressions l8 and 19 register, thus making a temporary lock for the letters. The plate together with the letters in place is then inserted into the frame 10, from the rear, and locked therein by the button 16, thus securing the letters or seal in place.
