EYEGLASSHOLDERa SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,325, dated January 21, 1896. Application filed October 14:, 1895- Serial No. 565,620. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH ZESTERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In Letters Patent No. 547,470, issued to me October 8, 1895, I have shown a very simple device for holding a pair of closed spectacles, and in my present invention use is made of some of the features seen in said patent, wit-11 an additional feature which renders the new construction especially adapted for holding those eyeglasses which grasp a persons nose, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my eyeglass-holder. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation, but showing a pair of eyeglasses applied to said holder and the latter mounted upon a cardboard or other backing. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the center of the holder.
The present holder, like the one previously patented to me, is made out of a single piece of thin sheet metal, and includes a plate A, of any appropriate shape, with upturned sockets B B at its ends, the central portion of said plate being inclined forward at C and punched out at D. This hole is substantially of a horseshoe shape, and the metal around its edge is bent forward, so as to form a keeper or flange E, which flange does not project squarely from the plate C, but is arranged at an angle thereto, or, in other words, it is wider across in front than at the rear. Plate A has a number of integral tangs F capable of being securely engaged with a backing G.
H H represent a pair of ordinary eyeglasses coupled together by a spring I, and provided with roughened clamps J J for grasping a persons nose. These glasses are slipped down within the holder until the lower portions of their frames are supported by the end sockets B B, at which time the clamps J J grasp the sides of the outwardly-flaring flange or keeper E, as seen in Fig. 2. Consequently the glasses are not liable to be accidentally detached from the keeper, but can be intentionally removed at any time by exerting sufficient of an upward pull to disengage said clamps from the keeper.
' I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, an eyeglass holder consisting of the plate A, having upturned-sockets B B, at its ends; an upper central-portion C, inclining forward; a hole D in said inclined-portion; and an outwardlyflaring flange E, extending a sufiicient distance around said slot to be grasped by the frame of an eye-glass, in the manner described, and for the purpose stated.
