BAG-FASTENER.
Specification of LettersTate-nt.
PatentedFehZ, 1915.
Application filed lanuary 24, 1914. Serial No. 814,064.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that LFn-Anz A. FULLER, a citizenof the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fas teners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains, to make, construct, anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming apart of-thisspecification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners, and particularly to fasteners for satchels, bags, pocket-books, and the like, and has for its object, the arrangement of an improved structure designed to co-act with the ordinary fastener of a satchel for preventing an accidental loosening or unfastening of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pivotally mounted auxiliary looking device in connection with a bag frame having the ordinary lift-lock or overlapping locking knobs, so that the auxiliary locking device may embrace the ordinary fastener for preventing opening thereof.
In its preferred embodiment, my improved device includes a pivoted member carried by one of the jaws, which when swung in one direction, will positively prevent the lock from opening but when swung in the opposite direction, will permit the free opening of the ordinary fastener.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the preferred structures illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent front elevations of a bag frame having applied thereto my improved bag fastener, in Fig. 1, part of the frame and post being broken away to illustrate the manner in which the several parts are connected. Fig. 3 represents a plan View of the same, with the handle securing loop swung into a horizontal position; and Fig. 4 represents a transverse section taken on lines w-w of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Similar numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
In the first form illustrated, my invention is applied to any ordinary or desired form of frame, consisting of two hinged members 1 vand 2. Near the middle portion of the frame member ,1, I secure the fastener 3 of thelift-lock type, in any convenient or desired manner, which is operatively connected with the frame member 2 by snapping or forcing the edge of the fastener over the usual projection (not shown) upon the frame member 2 in the well-known manner. In-theseoond form illustrated, my invention is applied to a frame provided with locking knobs 5 and 6, whichinterlock in the usual manner.
:77 representapertured'studs of anylconvenientform, secured to the frame member 1 by means of an integral reduced portion 8 inserted through apertures in the bag frame member 1 and riveted over in any suitable or convenient manner.
9 represents a locking element pivotally connected to the apertured studs 7 by means of integral trunnions 10 formed thereon.
11 indicates a stud which is fastened to the frame member 2 in any convenient or desired manner, designed to engage with a recess 16 formed in the locking element 9 and have locking engagement therewith, as shown. This locking element is made from a single piece of suitable material, formed with two arms 12 from which the trunnions extend, and by means of which it is pivotally connected to the studs 7. These arms 12 are provided with offset portions 13 which engage with the lift-lock 3, so that when the locking element is in locked position it will be impossible to disengage the lift-lock 3 from the usual projection on the frame member 2. The lower portion 14: of the locking element is preferably curved outwardly to provide convenient means for manipulating the lock, in order to disengage the same from the stud 11.
15 represents a loop or handle securing means, the ends of which are pivotally secured in the apertured studs 7-7, for the reception of that type of handle known as the fiat or strap handle.
The invention is not limited to the exact embodiment shown, but may be modified in various ways in the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, two members movable relatively to each other, a fastener secured to one of said members and holding said frame members together, posts secured on one frame member, and a locking element, comprising a yoke pivotally located in said posts, said yoke belng designed to embrace and overlie the fastener secured on the firstnamed member and operated independently from said fastener.
' 2. In combination, two members movable relatively to each other, a fastener secured to one of said members and holding said.
frame members together, apertured posts secured to one frame member, and a locking element, comprising a yoke provided with trunnions which are pivotally located in said.
posts, said yoke being provided with a re cess to engage a knob on the other frame member having locking engagement therewith, said yoke being further adapted to embrace and overlie the fastener secured on the first-named member and operatedindependently from said fastener.
3. In combination, two members movable Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, byaddressing the Washington, 1).0. a v
