MALVIN warm, or nnw'xonx, RY,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Application filed June 26, 1918. Serial No. 775,899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,.MALv1N Lron'rnn, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fans and particularly to those which present a thin flat blade adapted to be hand operated.
One object is to provide fans of this character having handles unusually convenient to operate and which are arranged to support the blade in a substantial manner.
Another object is to provide fans having a relatively large area susceptible of ornapart of the fan illustrating the manner in which it is held.
The invention comprises a card board blank 10 formed in any preferred shape with respect to its contour, the same constituting the blade, which in the higher grades may be covered with fabric as silk or other goods providing a facing of rich appearance that may be bound or otherwise secured along the edges if desired.
The handle portion consists of-two separate blanks formed of like contour with arms 15 extending outwardly, approximately crescent shaped and adapted to engage with and be rigidly united to the.
lower sides and edges of the blank 10 so as to embrace a portion of the blade; the lower end of the handle terminates in a semicircular projection 16. Between'this projection-,and the arms is a portion 17 of w der section connected by curves in such opening is manner as to fit the palm of the hand, the thumb or a finger being inserted through the central opening 18 formed in the portion 17. Thus the fan is held in a natural easy manner without effort on part of the operator and yet in such way that a more perfect control is obtained than with theusual style of handles employed.
The exterior of the handle of this fist or stickless fan is colored as may be preferred and coated with enamel or the like so as to be rendered impervious to perspiration or other moisture.
It will be seen that a thin fiat blade is provided readily susceptible to receive any inscription or embellishment desired. that the handle is also flat and but slightly thicker and that it can be secured to the blade so as toefiectually support the same.
It is not desired to be confined to' the exact embodiment shown as manifestly minor changes may be made in the handle design, as for instance, in place of having the thumb opening exactly central, it may be placed at one side so that it can be readily grasped by the hand of a child or small person or, by reversing the fan, so that the farther removed from -the edge next the palm, it would better accommodate a large hand.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1. In a fan of the class described. the combination with a cardboard blade adapted to receive inscriptions, of a cardboard handle embracing the lower side of said blade along the marginal'edges thereof. said handle conforming in profile to the palm of the hand and having an opening suited to receive the thumb.
2. In a fan of the class described, the combination with a blade having a symmetrical profile, of a handle suited to the palm of the hand and containing an opening shaped to suit and through which the thumb may be passed, and an impervious coating applied to said handle.
3. In a fan of the class described, the combination with an imperforate blade substantially elliptical in profile, having an uninterrupted smooth surface, of a. handle suited to the palm of the hand and to re- In testimony whereof I have signed my ceive the thumb through an elliptical openname to this specification in the presenceof ing, said handle being formed of two distwo subscribing witnesses.
